Guest guest
Jaya Guru Datta, Here is today's saying: “Man is a social being and therefore talking is inevitable. Also, human beings like to talk. With the help of a simple technique, talking can be converted into tapas. Which is this technique? One should try to reduce talking with others and, instead, cultivate the habit of reading good books. Reading good books is also a sort of conversation. By doing so, it can be ensured that one indulges in healthy conversation for a long time. We have observed above that it is the nature of the mind to develop affinity for anything about which it thinks intently. Therefore it results in mental penance. Agreed. But is it possible to read books all the time? Don't we have anything else to do? We should make it a rule to always speak the truth. By doing so, hypocrisy can be overcome. But the truth we speak should not hurt others. Hurting others is a sin. We should evelove the skill of telling the truth in a manner palatable to the other person. In a hurry to make it palatabl e, we should not indulge in flattering. It is also a sin. To achieve this, we must make sure that our words do not incite others. For this, we should speak as much less as possible. All these practises culminate in mental penance. This itself is vaachika tapas (verbal penance.)"
