Jaya Guru Datta,

Please note: Swamiji Says has a new e-mail address:

swamiji-says .

Here is today's saying:

“There are two or three types of surrender. One is to be a complete puppet of

Swamiji and to follow all His orders: 'Sit down!' 'Get Up!' 'Sleep!' 'Eat!'

'No feelings!' . . . This is one kind of surrender. Like a toy . . .this kind

of complete surrender is very difficult and very rare. Of course, it will

happen if Swamiji is permitting it . . .

the second kind of surrender is different: You behave like human beings. You

must follow your karma. You must face it. And at the same time, you must

surrender to the Sadguru and take knowledge from Him. Your ego has to be

transformed. You must surrender it to your Sadguru's feet. So, you must follow

your human qualities, you must follow your duties. And as much as possible, you

must maintain truth. You must live with human feelings. But your ego and your

confusion you must surrender to your Sadguru.

In the third type of surrender, you are giving everything to your Sadguru that

you have done for a good karma. Everything you have performed, the effects of

all pujas, of all homas, of all yajnas (fire rituals,) of all your penance you

surrender at His feet. There is nothing you expect for yourself. On the other

hand, you will face all the bad karma yourself, which is the result of your bad

actions. You may ask for good strength to face it, but you may not ask for

salvation. That is true devotion.

Your behaviour must be the behaviour of human beings. But how can Swamiji

transform you, if you have so much ego that you say: 'I know everything.' You

must follow your karma and dharma. And at the same time you can surrender

yourself to your Sadguru.

So, what you want, you can choose. Surrender is a big subject."
