Guest guest
Introduction Bhagavad Gita, which means the Lord's Song, shows the path of perfection and eternal peace to people of all times, irrespective of their caste, creed and nationality. It contains 700 verses and is in the form of a dialogue between Sri Krishna the Divine Master and His disciple Arjuna. The dialogue took place on the battlefield of Kurukshetra where the Pandavas and the Kauravas had assembled their armies for war, some 5000 years ago. The facts and events which led to the Kurukshetra war are as follows. In days of yore, there flourished a great kingdon in the north of India with its headquarters at Hastinapur (near Delhi). Pandu was ruling the kingdom after his father's death, as his elder brother Dhrtarastra was born blind and such a physical disability disqualified a prince for kingship according to the tenets of Sanathana Dharma. King Pandu had five sons and they were known as the Pandavas. As Pandu met with a premature death, all his sons were brought up by Dhrtarastra along with his one hundred sons called Kauravas. Thus the Pandavas and the Kauravas grew up under the same roof. The Pandavas were very intelligent and brave and withn a short period they could gain mastery over the Vedas and the art of archery and the use of other arms and weapons. The Kauravas were jealous by nature and they could not tolerate the Pandavas. Hence the Pandavas agreed to live separately sharing half of their kingdom.
