Guest guest
Jaya Guru Datta, Here is today's saying: “Shall we say now that it would be appropriate to consider the mind as 'I'? After all, it is the mind, which oversees the functions of sense organs. It also observes whether the sense organs are functioning or not. If mind is absent, a person will not see anything even though his eyes are wide open. A young man who is thinking about his lover will be so oblivious to everything happening in front of his eyes, that even if a big procession marches past him, he will not have seen it. But his eyes are open! This is because, his mind is engaged elsewhere. Because of this, it may appear as though the mind itself is the 'I'. But remember that you are able to say whether your mind is working or not. Do we not hear people say - 'my mind is very fresh and sharp today', or 'my mind is not O.K. today' etc. etc.? It means that you are observing your mind. In other words, the mind is 'drishya' (that which is seen) and you are the drashta (one who sees). Is it ever possible for the seer and the seen to be one and the same? We have said above that to see the pot, two things are necessary (i.e. the eyes and light). Assume that both are present, but the mind is otherwise engaged. In such a situation can the pot be seen? No. Therefore it can be said that for the pot to be seen, another means - namely, the mind, is required. Similarly, to hear a sound, to feel the touch, to experience the taste and to perceive a smell, mind serves as a means. How can that, which is a means (through which you perceive) become yourself? As the mind is a means as well as a drishya (that which is seen), it follows that the mind is not 'I'. Agreed."
