Having restrained all the senses one should sit integrated, deeming Me as the

Supreme. His wisdom is steady whose senses are under control.

LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 9

As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji

The senses are very turbulent. If the mind is full of Vasanas, the senses easily

draw it and drive it towards the external world. The mind can come in touch with

the external world only through the senses. Therefore, sense control and

destruction of Vasanas, in other words, attempts to purify the mind, must go

side by side. In order to achieve that, the Lord further says, “Having

restrained all the senses one should sit integrated, deeming Me as the Supreme.

His wisdom is steady whose senses are under control” (Chapter 2, Verse 61).

The Lord gives two practices to be followed simultaneously. The first is the

control of the senses and the second, fixing the mind on the Lord. That means

first the senses should not be allowed to run after the sense objects and get

attached to them. At the same time, the Sadhaka should fix his mind on the Lord

or he should think himself to be the Immortal pure Atman and meditate on it.

The objects of senses are ever ready to overpower man by their tremendous

attractive power. Therefore, as soon as sense-control is achieved, if the

Sadhaka never fixes his mind on the Lord, suddenly sense objects or ideas

pertaining to them will pounce upon him and hold him under their power. Like a

slave, he will be meekly submitting to them.

The Sadhaka must be always vigilant. Every sense is driving man to its specific

object. If the Sadhaka relaxes his efforts, he will be surely tempted and his

fall becomes certain. It cannot be known when the ideas of sense-objects will

form in the mind and drive the Sadhaka away from his goal. Therefore the Lord

says as soon as the senses are controlled the Sadhaka has to turn his gaze

inwards to his own Self.
