It is in this meaning that in the beginning of this lesson it was said- 'wakeful state is one in which the buddhi perceives the objects with the help of the sense organs.' By the above discussion, it becomes clear that the wakeful state pertains to the buddhi. There is a witness behind the buddhi. That itself is the 'Pratyagatma'. It always observes the two forms of buddhi. It is all pervading just like time and space. It has no sub division. It has no modifications either. It is verily of the nature of 'Dirk' (seeing). Therefore, there is no possibility of undergoing change. But, when one erroneously attributes (on account of Adhyaasa*) the Jagrat (waking) state to the atma (whereas in reality it belongs to the buddhi), it seems as thought the atma 'woke up'. Therefore people say 'I woke up'."
