Jaya Guru Datta,

Here is today's saying:

“This state in which the buddhi assumes two different forms (namely 'drishya'

and 'drashta') is called 'Jagradavashta; (wakeful state). It is in this meaning

that in the beginning of this lesson it was said- 'wakeful state is one in which

the buddhi perceives the objects with the help of the sense organs.' By the

above discussion, it becomes clear that the wakeful state pertains to the

buddhi.

There is a witness behind the buddhi. That itself is the 'Pratyagatma'. It

always observes the two forms of buddhi. It is all pervading just like time and

space. It has no sub division. It has no modifications either. It is verily

of the nature of 'Dirk' (seeing). Therefore, there is no possibility of

undergoing change. But, when one erroneously attributes (on account of

Adhyaasa*) the Jagrat (waking) state to the atma (whereas in reality it belongs

to the buddhi), it seems as thought the atma 'woke up'. Therefore people say 'I

woke up'."
