LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA - 14 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji The man who wishes to secure peace of mind should give up all desires. The natural tendency of a man is to seek pleasure from external objects. True happiness does not come from the contact with external objects. But it is a state of mind where there is neither like nor dislike of things. You like those things that give you pleasure and you dislike those that give you displeasure or pain. Those things that you like, you want to possess and enjoy them and those things that you do not like, you want to avoid. Thus an ordinary man is subject to the feelings of likes and dislikes and pleasure and pain. But a wise man does not have such feelings. He knows that pleasure or pain does not come from external objects but they depend upon his own mental condition. So he controls his mind and goes about in the world and remains undisturbed by the things that he contacts or comes across. Finally, you have to give up the feelings of ‘I and mine’ totally. If you possess wealth you are naturally worried about its safety, because the wealth is yours. You have the feeling that the wealth is ‘mine.’ On the other hand, you are not worried about the loss of other man’s wealth. In the same way, you love your child because it is yours. You do not have any love for your neighbor’s child. If any calamity comes to it, you are not worried, because it is not yours. But when your child meets with some accident you suffer because it is yours. So give up such feelings of ‘I and mine’ and have the conviction that everything belongs to God, and as a guardian your take care of your children or whatever God has given you.
