Chapter 3

Verse 7

Yas tv indriyaaNi manasaa niyamy'aarabhate'rjuna /

karm-endriyaiH karma yogam asaktaH sa vishishhyate //

But, O Arjuna, he who, controlling the senses by the

mind, commences the discipline of Karma Yoga by his

organs of actions, without attachment, far excels.

LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 18

As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji

Compiled by: Swami Dattananda

Bhakti Mala, November 1993

The reason for bondage is that attachment of the mind

to the fruits of actions. Therefore, first of all,

the mind should be freed from all sorts of

attachments. Then only can it be brought under

control. When the mind is controlled, senses of

knowledge and action also come under control as a

natural effect.

In fact, when a man’s mind is controlled, his senses

become excellent instruments in his hands to carry out

noble and selfless work in the world. Such work will

not befoul the purity of his mind and entangle him

again in the sensual world. Thus, the Lord in this

verse points out the way as to how work is to be

performed by a man. With his mind free from

attachment to the results, with his organs completely

under restraint, let him engage his senses of action I

work for the good of the world. Such a man excels and

is the best.
