Guest guest
Jaya Guru Datta, Here is today's saying: “We are perceiving the hill through the eyes. That is, using the eyes as instrument, the inner self perceives the existence of the hill. Is it not so? Similarly, using the smoke as evidence, the inner self gets the inferential knowledge of fire. Using the Vedas as the testimony, one comes to know about heaven and hell. Conversely, if there is an instrument, there has to be its user (karta - one who performs the action of using it). Also, the karta should be distinct from that which is perceived (the inner self which uses the eyes cannot be the hill itself, isn't it?). The hill is that which is being perceived. "I' am perceiving it through the eyes. Is there any doubt that 'I' am different from the hill? Now, let us assume there exists an evidence to prove the existence of Atman. If it were to be true, there should be someone who uses this evidence. He should be different from the Atman. How is this possible? That which uses all instruments and evidences is Atman. How then can there be someone else who uses Atman as the evidence. This isn't possible. Therefore it is not proper to asssume that there exists a testimony to prove the existence of the Atman."
