LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA - 21 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji “Verily, by action alone Janaka and others achieved perfection. At least, having an eye on the welfare of the people, you too should perform actions.” Arjuna might think that it is impossible to perform actions free from attachment. Therefore, to carry conviction to him, the Lord cites the examples of Janaka and others. The Lord says that even the great kings like Janaka, Aswapati, Ambarisha, etc., were self-realized souls. They attained this highest spiritual goal by discharging their duties without attachment. If kings like Janaka could live without attachment to his kingdom or fruits of his work, then any other man can definitely live such a life and be a Karma Yogi. Janaka was one of the greatest Karma Yogis. He had purified his mind by performing his work without attachment and attained the Supreme. The Lord then exhorts Arjuna to perform his work at least keeping an eye on the welfare of the people. Service to mankind is really an act of worship. By his selfless performance of his duties, Arjuna would be setting an example to others to follow. Following Arjuna’s example, others, also, will engage themselves in the performance of their work in a detached way. - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.
