Whatever he sets up as the standard, that the people follow. LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 21 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji Man, by nature, is fond of following the footsteps of others. So the Lord says in the next verse, “The way a great man works-- that very way other people too work. Whatever he sets up as the standard, that the people follow.” The sages and the great men in the society were always engaged in doing some good work, although they had no need of doing it. They did so only to set an example to others in the society. What the father does, the children follow. What the great leaders do, the common man follows. So the leaders should try to live up to a high standard of moral and spiritual life. If they fail to do so, others in the society will follow their example and become corrupt. Thus the leaders would become responsible in spoiling the minds of the people and causing ruin to society. On the other hand, if the leaders do some good work, their followers will get inspiration and they will also start doing some good work aimed at social welfare, and then the society will flourish. So the leaders and the elders in the society have a responsibility to show the correct path to the people around them. As such, they should always adhere to truth. They should be selfless and perform their duties without attachment. - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.
