A great clarification dawned in me today as I read

some literature relating to the so-called "Aswamedha

Yaga". In the ramayana and other epics, it is

mentioned that one who performs the "Aswamedha Yaga"

or "Horse Sacrifice" will reign supreme, or will rule

the earth. The practice involved a king who would take

a royal horse, followed by his warriors, into

neighboring kingdoms; and if anyone stopped the

movement of this horse, he/she was indirectly

challenging the owner of the horse to battle, to

determine who was mightier.

However, the real meaning behind the term "Aswamedha

Yaga" was made clear to me through a literal

translation of the original sanskrit terms:

Aswam (horse) implies that which is restless, as

horses are physically always restless and need to move

around constantly, or shake some part of their body

continually.

Medha is another word for mind.

So, the mind under the control of the senses, becomes

restless. Therefore, he/she who performs the Aswamedha

Yaga -- i.e., sacrifice of the restless aspect of the

mind (through sense control), gains supreme control

over him/herself, which is equivalent to mastering the

earth.

Anyway, I thought i'd share that with the rest, who

may have been wondering.
