LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 31 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji Compiled by: Swami Dattananda Bhakti Mala, June 1995 The Lord says, “Freed from passion, fear, and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the austerity of knowledge, many have attained Me.” Passion, fear and anger are the qualities dominating in demoniac kind of beings. But spiritual seekers have to develop divine qualities in them. How can they attain them? By Jnana Tapas, that is, by the penance of divine knowledge. Seeking divine knowledge itself is great penance. And after sustained effort, the seekers after truth secure freedom from the great evils like passion, fear, and anger. As a result, divine knowledge becomes firmly rooted in them. They get fully merged in the thought of God. Thus, they become purified, (putah) and become one with the Supreme Divinity. The Lord also points out in this verse the means to attain Him. He says, ‘be absorbed in Me and take refuge in Me.’ As one acquires greater and greater firmness in Jnana, (Divine knowledge) all impurities are gradually cleared from the mind. When mind becomes completely pure and steady, the Self is realized. Sign up for SBC Dial - First Month Free http://sbc.
