LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA - 32 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji The Lord said, “The four-fold caste has been created by Me according to the differentiation of Gunas and duties. Though I am the author of that (act of classification,) know Me to be actionless and changeless.” The four-fold order of castes has been created by the Lord according to the people’s qualities (Gunas) and actions. Human beings are divided into four principal classes. There can be many sub-divisions. The people belonging to the first class are called Brahmins. They are extremely religious and possess lot of self-control. By nature they are selfless. They work for the good of all. They preach religion and the principles of good conduct and pure life to others. The people belonging to the second class are known as Kshatriyas. They work ceaselessly for their own sake or for the sake of their family. If they work for the sake of others, they do it to earn a name and fame and thereby get status in the society or nation. Most of them are good warriors and military or police officials. They protect people from the tyranny of the wicked. All warriors, politicians, social workers, etc., belong to this class. The third class is that of the Vaisyas. They are traders and merchants and they work for earthly prosperity. The fourth class is known as Sudras. These people are intellectually backward and they can render only physical service to the higher-class people. These four classes form the caste system, which is known as Chatur Varna. Although it is hereditary at present, originally this division of the people was according to their aptitudes and mental culture. No society or country can live without such divisions. In all countries and places, those who are of noble parents and those who have a great mental caliber get more favorable opportunities in life than others.
