LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 46 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji “Indeed, O Mighty-armed (Arjuna), renunciation of action is difficult to achieve without resorting to the performance of action (Karma Yoga.) The sage following the path of disinterested action (Karma Yoga) quickly goes to Brahman." There are a few people who have attained mental purity as a result of the good deeds done by them in their previous lives. They can straightaway resort to the path of renunciation without following the discipline of Karma Yoga. But majority of people do not have such mental strength and culture. Yet they can certainly attain the highest perfection by progressive stages with the help of the path of Karma Yoga. Therefore, however fickle or impure might be one’s mind, if he goes along the path of disinterested action without difficulty, he can attain to Brahman. Here, real renunciation is called Brahman, because it leads to the knowledge of the Self. Therefore, in this context, Brahman means renunciation in the real sense, consisting in steadfastness to the knowledge of the Supreme Self. In short, sannyasa is not a state of indifference or laziness and negligence of one’s duties. But it is the true feeling for the freedom of the soul that vibrates all the time in the mind of the man of renunciation. As such, his mind is not disturbed by the modification of the passions pertaining to earthly desires. His mind is always steady and peaceful. This state of mind is absolutely necessary for getting the realization of Brahman.
