LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 48 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji “Devotees of Karma Yoga perform action with body, mind, intellect and also senses, giving up attachment, for the purification of the heart.” By giving up attachment to the results, the Yogis (Karma Yogis) perform actions through the body, mind, intellect and the senses. They do the work with the thought that they do action only for God and not for their gain. Thus, dedicating the fruit of their actions at the feet of the Lord, they work for the purification of their mind. Without attachment means without attachment to the fruit of action. Those who follow the path of action perform actions only after giving up the desire for fruit. They dedicate the fruit of their action to God. It is this spirit of sacrifice that purifies their heart. Dedication to God means offering the fruit for the welfare of the fellow beings. A man’s selfish desire for the fruit of his action not only creates problems for him but also to the entire society. Just imagine the different limbs in our body like hands, legs, mouth, stomach, etc., and how they are acting individually. Although each limb acts individually, it acts in order to maintain the whole body in good condition and not for its own sake. If any limb works for its own sake, the body will decay and die. For instance, if the heart does not pump and circulate the blood to the entire system of the body, the whole body will get paralyzed and destroyed. The selfishness of the heart will cause the death of the body. In the same way, the selfish desire of human being will become the cause of the destruction of the society and the nation. Therefore, Sri Krishna wants us to abandon the attachment, or desire, for the fruit of our actions. And this is the principal means to win spiritual perfection.
