Knowledge is covered by ignorance. Therefore living beings are deluded. LESSONS FROM BHAGAVAD GITA – 49 As taught by Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji “The Lord does not accept the merit or demerit of anyone. Knowledge is covered by ignorance. Therefore living beings are deluded.” The Lord does not accept the sin of any devotee, nor merits offered by devotees. Then the question may arise, why then do devotees offer virtuous acts like worship, sacrifice, charities, etc.? The answer is, discriminative knowledge is shrouded in ignorance. Therefore, the non-discriminative man thinks, “I work, cause others to work, I enjoy and cause others to enjoy the fruits of works.” When the Self is realized, then the feeling of doership of all actions vanishes. The omnipresent God is present within each and every one of us. But we do not realize that. Why? It is because our knowledge is covered by ignorance (Maya.) So we always remain on the human plane. It is this power called Maya that makes us forget our true identity with God. Instead, it makes us identify ourselves with our body, mind and intellect and creates the feeling of doership of all actions. In fact, all actions are done by the Ego complex constituted by the body, mind and intellect. This Ego complex performs actions in tune with its Nature (swabhava) made up of three gunas, Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, according to its tendencies or Vasanas. It is this Nature that forces a man to perform actions, either virtuous or sinful, according to its tendencies. When these actions are performed, the reactions come to us according to the nature of our actions. If our actions were sinful, we get miseries in return and we suffer. If our actions were good, we get good in return and feel happy. Again, it is our Ego complex that enjoys and suffers. God is neither responsible for our virtuous acts nor for the sinful ones. So it is said that the Lord does not accept the merit or the demerit of anyone.
