in "From Heart to Heart" i´ve read that proteine is not good, that it makes

one prone to restlessness and wishes.

This is of course true for meat and fish.

Now my question is, is this also, at least to some extent, true for too much

cow milk or even too much soja proteine? does too much milk or do too many

milk products, too many soja products etc also make one restless?

According to the latest food research the human body seems to need much less

proteine than generally assumed as far as i know.

I have no doubt that this is true at some point in everyone's journey.

I'm not at that point yet, and I expect most are not. For a variety of

reasons I still wish I could be completely vegetarian, as I was for a

number of years, but I believe it is in the best interest of my health

now to eat a fair amount of fish and some chicken. In spite of this, I

am, with Swamiji's grace, much less restless and desirous than I was a

few years ago before I met Swamiji and developed diabetes.

I was vegetarian for seven years, consuming way too much milk products,

especially cheese, which resulted in much conjection and a milk allergy

(which I'm about over now that I have much reduced milk products). I

consume a fair amount of soy protein now, but believe excessive reliance

on any one or two sources of protein, such as mostly soy, is not good.

Some people develop soy allergies.

It is true that daily protein requirements have been overstated in many

cases. And modern research has proved that it is not necessary to get

complete protein in a single meal for it to be balanced. The amino acids

can stay in the body for a day or so before combining, so if you get a

balance in a day, that is good enough.

How much protein is best can be very different for diffent individuals.

Of course children, pregnant women, athletes, etc. need more than

average. Also, we need a certain number of calories a day (which differs

a great deal from one person to the next also), and if a very high

percentage of this comes in carbohydrates, it puts a big burden on the

pancreas, causes major fluctuations in blood sugar, and can throw the

whole system out of balance. Some bodies are much better at handling

this than others. In general, I am very confident that both typical

American and Indian diets are way too high in carbohydrates, which has

resulted in a tremendous growth in diabetes in both countries in recent

years. Type I diabetics like myself, who have to get all or most of

their insulin via injection, are in a situation that makes carb

reduction especially important, since insulin need is directly

proportional to carb intake, and there are serious health risks to

taking larger amounts of artificial insulin.

Of course getting most of your calories from fat is also not a good

idea. Too much protein, regardless of its source, can also cause

problems. An excess of any of the macro nutrients (carb, protein, and

fat), will overload some part of your body.

In summary, my personal experience and research indicates the value of a

balanced diet and paying attention to what your personal needs are.

Dogmatic adherence to any one guideline, even a generally valuable one

like vegetarianism, can lead to trouble.
