(Sri Datta Darshanam, top of page 66) Now my question is: could a person a very long time ago live for a very very long time? I think this isnt fiction, people were on this earth many years before the western history..true, but it seems odd to just believe it. They also were different spiritually 4 we life in the Kali yuga which is characterized with spiritual decline. Does anyone know a reason for the spiritual decline and the difference in lifetime? Guest guest Posted October 25, 2002 Report Share Posted October 25, 2002 Hi, Jai Guru Datta, Though I may not be able to answer to the point, but these are my first thoughts. 1) My great grand fathers were taller than today's average height. Even in the west today the average height is much tallewr than people in east. Similarly if you go ages before....probably similar strengthier standards might have existed. 2)Yoga can give you almost any thing in this universe. Even there are instances TODAY that some great yogi's could retain life for much more years and told desciples that they can do that for ever. But they always told that to do so violates nature....and hence one should NOT do that and that is how they ended their life. This, they preach, can be acquired by certain MUDRAS and YOGA BANDHAS by doing aasanaas etc. There are AASANAAS in Patanjali YOGA SUTRAS which are claimed to cure even KAALAKOOTA visham (Poison). If I am not wrong, a person who took poison, if sits in this particular aasana within 3 days I guess, he will be alright!!!! For example there is a specific incident in AndhraPradesh, in India very recently contemprary to us that a Yogi by name "Mummidivaram Baala yogi" demonstrated how one can live without air etc.... There is another roomer that a yogi who can turn his toungue inwards and touch the tip of inner pallete's tip inside mouth and be in a specific yoga mudra, he conquers hunger, quest,and breathing. You can refer to "Bala" and "Ati Bala" viday's in RAAMAAYANA. I personally saw in my child hood people who dig a pitch and bury their head completely under the earth. Then they lift their body into the air like in "Sirshaasana!". Then they will be like that for ONE FULL DAY! and I personally witnessed in a village called Kandukur in A.P. in India. Nature responds to the call of great saints. Even today we witness nature respinding to the call of SADGURU. 3) MANTRA power and Saadhanaa A saint can conquer almost any thing, with the power of MANTRA (scred syllable). He who has won the nature, he who is One with the absolute...for him, what is unconquerable? If GOD himself is pleased with a devotee, then HE will grant the devotee everything to make the DEVOTEE a god!! Refer to the BHAGAVAD GITA : "Mookam Karoti Vaachaalam..." How can a dumb fellow speak?....Just by HIS wish. How can a lame fellow jump? .....Just by HIS wish. How could "Padma Paada" the desciple of Sri Aadi Sankaraachaarya walk on water when his GURU called him from the other side of the river? All these are NOT said in scriptures just like that. They are all real truths, provided we have FAITH and follow scrupulously what ever our Guru dictates to us! And that faith should not be feeble. ---- See what Swami Vivekananda says: "FAITH, FAITH, FAITH....Faith that can crumble even the mountains to powder, Faith that ca dry up the incessant oceans, Faith that can pierce through the mysteries and boundaries of this universe...such sort of the Faith is the need of the hour...." And what should we do to get that: - Swami Vivekananda says.... "CALL UPON THE SLEEPING SOUL!! And see how it awakes!! Power will come, Glory will come, Purity will come , Goodness will come and every thing that is excellent will come when this sleeping soul is roused to self concious activity!!" Summary: ======== It is quite natural to have questions like this. Because we are trying to understand the absolute with our limited brain and knowledge. And it is always encouraged that one should have such inquisitive nature to know the absolute. Saastraas dictated that one should ask humbly his GURU----- "Tadviddhi Prani Paateena Pari prasnena Sevayaa".....GEETA one should read scriputres and holy books ..... To understand these super human phenomemna, INNER FEELING and SELF EXPERIENCE..."Aatmanubhooti" is the only solution and that can be obtained ONLY in the divine presence of SADGURU and HIS grace. Because a SADGURU has the capacity to let you understand the unkowable.... Lord Dakshinaa moorthy, solved all questions and puzzles(like this one) to all the great sages sitting infront of HIM only through mere SILENECE. "MOUNA VYAAKHYA PRAKATITA PARABRAHMA TATTVAM YUVAANAM"..... I hope this helps to some extent. I will end this with a short saying of Swami Vivekanand.... Somebody approached SV with a similar question......then His reply was: "You are trying to scale HIMAALAYAAS with the limited capacity of your scale (the regualr 1ft scale we have) that YOUR (Limited)science has granted YOU. It is an impossible task! And can only be self experience!".
