As Shivaratri approaches, I thought some of the devotees might appreciate a

translation of the Linga Astakam.

Linga Astakam

 

Brahma murari surachitta lingam--nirmala bhashita shobita lingam, janma jaduhkha

vinashaka lingam--tat pranamami sada Shiva lingam

 

Thou art the source of divine music, expressive of the beauty of purity. Remover

of the sorrows of our life, my saluations to the O eternal Lord.

 

Deva muni pravararchitta lingam--kamad aham karuna kara lingam, ravana darpa

vinashana lingam--tat pranamami sada shiva lingam

 

Adored by Gods and saints, remover of lust, ego, pride and arrogance, my

salutations unto you O eternal Lord.

 

Sarva Sugandhi sulepita lingam--buddhi vivardhana karana lingam, siddha suasura

vandita lingam--tat pranamami sada shiva lingam

 

You make all fragrant and enlightened. Praised by the adepts, good and bad among

us all, my salutations to thee O eternal Lord.

 

Kanaka mahamani bhooshita lingam--phani pati veshita shobita lingam, daksha

suyagna vinashana lingam--tat pranamami sada shiva lingam

 

Adorned by the jewels of great virtues, thou art beautifully dressed, O thou

remover of ritualistic pride, my salutations unto thee O eternal Lord.

 

Kumkuma chandana lepita lingam--pankaja hara sushobita lingam, sanchitta papa

vinashaka lingam--tat pranamami sada shiva lingam

 

We worship thee with the objects of adoration, such as flower garlands, O thou

remover of our sins, my salutations unto thee O eternal Lord.

 

Deva ganarchitta sevita lingam--bhavair bhaktibhir eva cha lingam, dina kara

koti prabhakara lingam-tat pranamami sada shiva lingam

 

Served by Godly people with feeling, devotion and sentiment, thou maketh

ordinary souls radiant. My salutations unto thee O eternal Lord.

 

Ashta dalo pariveshita lingam--sarva samud bhava karana lingam, ashta daridra

vinashita lingam--tat pranamami sada shiva lingam

 

Served by many worthy persons, thou uplifter of all and remover of our

afflictions, my salutations unto thee, O eternal Lord.

 

Suru guru sura vara poojita lingam--sura vana pushpa sadachitta lingam, parat

param paramatmaka lingam--tat pranamami sada shiva lingam

 

Worshiped by good teachers, with the beautiful flowers of their learning, thou

art the supreme soul, beyond the beyond, my salutations unto thee O eternal

Lord.
