Guest guest
Jgd, ..Yes thats true. In addition i would like to say, that Sri Swamiji has said to ask questions not with the mind, but questions should come from the heart. So "thinking" is done better with the heart. Sgd, Win. .. .. Guest guest
I tried this thought watching for a few days. I found out that it is not possible to think a single thought, apart from maybe things like "my key is in my pocket" i.e merely mechanical thoughts, that are not selfish. And this no matter whether I write myself as "I" or "i", this is only outward and superficial, it doesn´t really indicate anything. If e.g. I want to pass my exam, who wants to pass it? Does the Self want anything? No. Yet if I am lazy instead, who is lazy? Is the Self lazy? No. If I think I must get up early for meditation, again, does the Self think so? No. Yet again if I think instead, oh, it doesn´t matter, I prefer to sleep a bit longer, does the Self think so? NO. If I or someone else thinks "thoughts should come from the heart" (I did think so until very recently, in fact until only a few days ago) this again is only a thought concept conceived by ego. Because that which I consider as "from the heart" depends on my conditioning, just as what e.g Win considers as from his heart depends on his conditioning. So it is all still a reaction and thus in dvaita realm. That is in my opinion the reason why Swamiji says in several Sangraha Sooktis that annihilation of thoughts must be the aim. Yet then again, according to what Pradyumna said, if I force thought annihilation or if I want liberation, this is again ego, it is the same as if I said: "destruction to adharma" because it is ego that claims to know what adharma is and what not, i.e. judges, but it is also ego that forces thought annihilation or that wants liberation. (The Self doesn´t want anything, it is ever in bliss, it is eternal and never changing.) So really this is a catch 22 as it seems. ;-) So that´s why the following Sookti says that we should remain always awake, not only on Shivaratri! Not in the sense of not going to bed any more, but in the sense of being aware of one´s own motivations Faces of Ego The faces of ego (Aham) or the sense of I-ness arising on the mind’s plane are as countless as waves arising on the surface of ocean. A saadhaka (aspirant) must be very careful about them.Ego will manifest itself in a wealthy man, in his riches; in a political man, in his power; in a scholar, in his scholarship; in an artist, in his name and fame; in an administrator, in his status; in a devotee, in his devotion; in a saadhaka, in his saadhana… so on and so forth. What a paradox! For a Jnani (the realized one), ego is a mere illusion – a shadow having no existence of its own; but for an ordinary man, the same ego is the thickest barrier between him and God obstructing the Divine Vision. Therefore, be guarded against ego. Remain always awake, to see, that it does not show its face. - Sri Swamiji Jai Guru Datta! > This is why people need to contemplate, think deeply and never stop > thinking, ...until thinking itself stops and understanding begins. Guest guest
jgd, in the light of the recent posting, i would like to say this: the atma resides in ones hart. One can by daily meditating on ones heart for long period, for example 10 to 15 years, grow to a point where one gets "answers" to "questions", with anhilation of thoughts as the greatest answer. I also think that Sri Swamiji in His publications has very acurately given all the info we need to grow in the above sense. sgd, Win Tax Center - forms, calculators, tips, and more
Guest guest
I agree with Pradyumna 100 %, that meditation once or twice daily will in all probability not be enough. You will get answers, for sure, everyone has already got some answers from Swamiji, somehow or other. But for cessation of thoughts nothing less than permanent awareness is necessary in my opinion. Just as Pradyumna has said: "Awareness alone can save you from the ego. If you are truly busy trying to hunt down your ego, you generally don't have time for "loose talk" or "gossip" or anything else really. You would be 24hrs a day immersed in awareness of your mental processes, without any judgement or condemnation; you are simply aware. This is real meditation. Meditation on the source of "all this"." And just as Swamiji has said in "Faces of Ego": ...Remain always awake.. No need to contradict me now, let´s postpone the "issue" for 10-15 years or so and let´s see then ... only experience will show, not words, not thoughts. I will go on watching and postpone discussing ... Jai Guru Datta > > jgd, in the light of the recent posting, i would like to say this: the atma resides in ones hart. Guest guest
Jgd, i addition to my beneath posting i would like to say that i like discussing these subjects very much, but i'm not attacking(so to say) people i'm attacking what i think are false, incorrect or big-ego reasoning/arguments. I'm discussing so that we reach a higher common (spiritual) ground. I learn a lot from you guys, tanx. Further i said one "can" ..and..."for example" 10-15 years. . jgd Win. .. .. > > jgd, in the light of the recent posting, i would like to say this: the atma resides in ones hart. Guest guest
I also want to thank you and everyone else taking part in discussing on the list. when i was 18 someone who died years ago gave me a book about exactly this subject, i.e. "choiceless awareness", which Pradyumna is right now discussing. At that time I felt very much attracted and yet didn´t bother much, i.e. gave up this watching very soon as i found it too exhausting. The fact that it has now come back to me through Swamiji´s Grace is amazing. Hope this time i won´t give up so easily. And yet this "hope..." is yet another wish, conceived by my ego, so i am trying to just watch, trying not to condemn myself or others, nor to justify myself or others. I also realize that i tend to feel very "lonely" while doing this watching (i realize that i would prefer only discussing, without watching myself), as while this is done, there is not so much talking any more, and one can only do it alone, for oneself. not even Pradyumna will help me watch my thoughts. and then again, who is lonely? jai guru datta. > Jgd, i addition to my beneath posting i would like to say that i like > discussing these subjects very much, but i'm not attacking(so to say) > people i'm attacking what i think are false, incorrect or big-ego > reasoning/arguments.
