Guest guest
Namaste Friends, The Asiatic black bear or "Moon Bear" produces vast amounts of ursodeoxycolic acid or UDCA, an active ingredient in bile. Usage of bear bile as medicine is a practise the Chinese (in China) claims as an ancient tradition. Some say it came out of a ancient pharmacopoeia book and others say no such thing. To cut a long story short, North Korea in the 1980s perfected the catheter method of bile collection which China hastily adopted. Bear bile farming is a barbarious business. Many of the bears in these farms were snared from the wild with wire paraphernalia, steel-jaw traps which injure or sever the paws or legs. They are forced into limited cages where they have catheters inserted into them and where they spend the rest of their days without being able to stand nor walk. For more info, please visit: www.animalsasia.org The AAF (Animals Asia Foundation), founded by Jill Robinson (British- born, Hong Kong-based) raises money through sponsorships and people can pay to name a bear, for a month's upkeep or a year's medical needs among other options. The organisation pays farmers for each bear and transports them to an AAF-operated sanctuary in Chengdu where they are provided with medical treatment and rehabilitation which includes physiotherapy and socialization.
