To me I love to hear anything about Ganesh, so this helps me. I like to get different people's perspectives. That reminded me of my original encounter with images of Ganesh that followed me across America. I had mentioned this in an earlier post. As I traveled across the country to take a new job in Boulder, CO. I remember staying at a hotel that had a huge image of Ganesh in the lobby. I remember paying for my room under that image. Then, I had the best night's sleep ever. It was half-way between Florida and Denver, sort of like a threshold. Anyway, it was the only hotel I stayed at between here and there. Then when I got to Boulder one of my girlfriends and her husband took me to this Indonesian restaurant for my first meal in Boulder and we sat next to a huge sculpture of Ganesh. I felt like a presence was leading me and guiding me and even making me feel at home amidst great career and socail change. Then the job ended up not working out and I had to go back to Florida. We ate at that restaurant again, at the same table, and I went back to that hotel again, and slept in the same room. It was like everything was going backwards, but was the same, and Ganesh was there through all the changes. I am a Christian. I do not worship the Hindu gods. I do not do puja and I do not go to temples to reverence their images. But nevertheless I know that God was with me. Since then I have come to find out alot more about God through the images and stories of Ganesh. For me he is alot like Jesus who I believe to be an incarnation of God. Ganesh's ankusa recalls for me a similar image of Jesus as a shepherd, who with his staff, pushes us on through life. His bowl of sweets not only reminds me to be childlike. Through the sankha call to prayer I am reminded of the Jewish ramshorn which calls people to prayer in Israel. So, for me,not being Hindu, I can see how God has made himself available to me through Ganesh's many forms. Also, I don't know alot about the milk miracle, but tend to believe in it. Guest guest
- Bill Rogers Saturday, June 09, 2001 9:05 AM Sy's story and Bill's story too..... I do not worship the Hindu gods. I do not do puja and I do not go to temples to reverence their images. I thought I'd interject a bit here. I feel I have a close relationship with some gods & goddesses -- Ganesh being a prime example -- but I do not worship. Maybe I can be likened to a kid with a crush on a teacher, or like I have a real loving bond with an older sibling. Maybe like the love I have for sunsets or the awe I have for hurricanes. I have an altar to Ganesh, but I cover it with whatever it feels to me Ganesh would like. I live in New Orleans & Mardi Gras is a big art of local life, so Ganesh is festooned with beads & is wearing a feathered mask. As Yuletide approaches, Ganesh wears a Santa hat. Ganesh likes money, so he wears a necklace of paper money & has a pot of coins before him. But all is done in playful respect. I feel like a kid again around Ganesh even as he teaches me to bear the responsibilities of being an adult. Same is true of other deities as well. It is about me opening my heart up to have a personal relationship with them. Alobar
Guest guest
Hi Bill, Thank you for sharing your story too; yes I read the earlier one as well but was too busy at the time to respond even though I felt compelled to.. Ganesa is BiG in Bali, Indonesia. It is just about the only place in the nation which continues with Sanatana Dharma amidst Islamic prevalence. I would not elaborate further at this moment as Indonesian govt. policies, religious and otherwise, are highly sensitive in the current climate. ------------- You headed back to Florida, may I ask an irrelevant question? Have you heard of Joseph Gersten, once upon a time Mayor of Florida? Him and Reno (FBI) are old enemies..... No I am NOT entering into any political discussions but merely would like to seek your views in regards info about Mr. Gersten, that is if you happen to know, as a resident (if you were) of Florida. Please be assured your personal views will be held HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL, many thanks.. ================== Back to Ganesa: ================= So, for > me,not being Hindu, I can see how God has made himself available to > me through Ganesh's many forms. Many blessings, SY Zenith
