She was married to Shiva. Today she is coming to her father's house with daughters (Saraswati and Lakshmi) and sons (Ganesha and Kartikeya). Saraswati is the Goddess of Learning, Lakshmi is the goddess of Wealth, Ganesha is the God of Commerce and Kartikeya is the God for the knowledge of war. Durga is the Goddess of power. She killed Mahisasura (vide the picture). Mahisasura was the epitome of sin. She will stay here from 16th to 20th October. The people in Calcutta will celebrate her coming. Different types of magazines and music cassettes on her coming are published. The children wearing colourful dress will move from pandal to pandal. Different cuisine will be prepared in the houses. People will send greetings cards to their friends.All offices and institutes will be closed during these holidays. This celebration has many social and commercial significances.
