Both their families are distressed to say the least. Hoping they are both alive and well. Australia has rolled out Top Security for U.S. companies, the embassy and consulates here. American Express Tower in Sydney has got squads, etc. looking out for them. Bill Clinton flew out from Port Douglas to Cairns for flight back to New York today. John Howard our Prime Minister and all political parties in Australia (ministers, etc.) have indicated full support for America. Heartfelt condolences to all who lost loved ones and for those injured. Hopefully the crews will be able to locate those still alive in the basement of Twin Towers. Prayers for the demised. This morning, at 9:00 AM, I saw that burning tower in action. It was on the television screen at my company cafeteria. The World Trade Center was in flames, both towers struck by planes hijacked from Boston's Logan airport. As the morning wore on, the news got worse. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania, thankfully missing its target, although, like the others, killing all on board. An hour later, I watched television footage of the World Trade Center towers collapsing in on themselves. We all let out a gasp of horror as the camera panned out to show a huge cloud of smoke enveloping lower Manhattan. The numbers of dead and wounded keep rising. At least 50,000 people were in the World Trade Center at the time of the crash. At least 100 people were hurt or killed in the Pentagon crash. Hundreds of passengers and flight crews on those four hijacked planes lost their lives. Almost 12 hours later, the reality of what has happened has barely sunk in. I don't know if it will ever sink in. The number of dead is too tremendous, unfathomable. And, like the rest of the nation, I am asking "Who did this?" I am asking, "Why?" Words of Warning As of 8:00 PM on the evening of the attacks, no group has stepped forward to claim responsibility. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Osama bin Laden, the leader of an Islamic fundamentalist group may be involved, "No one has been ruled out, but our initial feeling is that this is the work of bin Laden," a high-ranking federal law enforcement official told the Los Angeles Times earlier today. If bin Laden does indeed turn out to be the man behind the attacks, it may be a crime motivated by religious ideals. As pagans, we all know how dangerous religious fanaticism can be. But, as pagans, it would be hypocritical for us to let this crisis color our perception of the Islamic religion. Just as Christianity runs the gamut from open-minded free thinkers to bigoted fundamentalists, so does the religion of Islam. As members of a persecuted minority, pagans should not condemn those who belong to another. What Can We Do? If you live in or around one of the affected areas: Stay calm. If you are a doctor or nurse, volunteer your services Stay off the phone, especially cell phones, until the state of emergency abates No matter where you live: Pray. Do rituals for healing.
