Guest guest
Namaste Friends, Some media excerpts: Several countries, and particularly Pakistan, braced for a backlash from militant Islamic groups. In Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, more than 5,000 radical Islamist students, armed with sticks, staged a highly charged rally, chanting "Down with US" and burning an effigy of Bush. Last night, the US State Department warned US citizens against travelling to Pakistan. A top Pakistani Muslim cleric, Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, today joined the call for a jihad to be launched if the United States launches attacks against Afghanistan. And, the spiritual guide of pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiites, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah, issued a religious decree prohibiting Muslims from aiding the United States in any war against any Muslim entity. In Kabul, the tone was markedly defiant. "Of course if there is an invasion of an Islamic country, there will be jihad against the invaders," a senior Taliban official told AFP. Hundreds of Islamic scholars, or ulema, streamed into Kabul to discuss a message from Washington delivered by a delegation from neighbouring Pakistan, telling the Taliban to surrender bin Laden or face the consequences. Meanwhile, the worldwide hunt for those behind the devastating attacks fanned out as intelligence agencies tracked thousands of leads. In Italy alone, police detained 60 people today in a vast swoop on radical leftists groups suspected of having links with terrorism. Authorities in Panama were investigating an alleged connection between a financial firm registered in the Central American country and bin Laden. US authorities have identified the 19 hijackers, all of Arab or Middle Eastern origin, and said some of them left behind Arabic literature suggesting links to bin Laden's al-Qaeda organisation. In New York, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said hopes of finding anyone alive in the ruins of the World Trade Centre have almost faded but were "not totally over".
