Guest guest
Pardon my repost of this topic. But I just really want to hear your opinions on this. And, please forgive my questions if they seem a little elementary. O.K. Here's the post: I am interested in the topic of FRIENDSHIP. I would love to hear everyone's views on FRIENDSHIP. Also, in older stories, did Ganesh ever have a close friend? Who was that? I would be interested in hearing about the friendships of other gods too. I know that Rama has Lakshmana. Are they supposed to be very close? What is Hanuman's relationship to Rama? Isn't Rama an incarnation of Vishnu? Does Hanuman interact with Rama or Vishnu or both? Also, I am interested in any Indian or other Asian views of FRIENDSHIP. Thanks. Bill
Guest guest
Bill Hi. I can tell you a bit about Rama, Hanuman, Lakshmana. I have read Ramayana 5 times, in 5 different versions, and I pray to Hanuman regularly and have read much about Hanuman. I wanted to tell the story, but it is better told herehttp://members.tripod.com/~srinivasp/mythology/ramayana.html in brief:) Hanuman, is the 'monkey' god who becomes the greatest devotee of Rama. Hanuman's father is Vayu and his mother gave birth to him under some different circumstances. The story I know is that That 'fruit' which was shared by King Dasaratha's wives: Kausalya and Kaikeyi, in some stories is payasam (rice pudding) and in others some other type of substance. From this was born Rama, Lakshmana, Satrughna, and Bharat. However, in a story a part of this payasam was drifted into the hills by a kite and was eaten by Anjana, Hanuman's mother. Soon after, Hanuman was born. Hanuman was devoted to God from day 1. Hanuman wanted to learn the vedas, and so the one he chose to be his guru was SURYA, the sun god. But surya said as I have to keep moving across the sky, how will you keep up with your lessons. Hanuman said he would travel with the sun at the same speed and learn the lessons. And this he did with devotion and mastered all the scriptures. From here, surya asked Hanuman to join with his son, Sugriva in the hills by becoming his his minister and constant companion. And one day, Rama and Lakshmana were going through those hills searching for Sita. Sugriva got nervous then as his brother Vali, was on the lookout for him. He asked Hanuman to disguise himself and find out who is in the forest. Hanuman went in disguise as a Brahmin and went and spoke to Rama. Rama said 'no other with such flawless speech could be but a Brahmin' and then Hanuman realized he was speaking to Rama and fell prostrated to him. Hanuman vowed to Rama and Laksmana he would do anything and everything to help Rama find Sita. And that he did. He was the only 'GOD" who could make himself in various sizes and in addition there is never any blemish he committed. HE showed his devotion to Rama, Laksmana and Sita by 'putting them in his heart' There are many a picture showing Hanuman opening up his chest with their picture inside. As for Ganesha, I am not sure about his friends. I know his brother Murugan. There is a famous story about the two. One day Siva (Ganesh's father) asked his sons to circle the earth. As Murugan (karthik) has a peacock as his vehicle, he circled the earth on his peacock. However, Ganesha with the big belly and a mouse as his vehicle knew he could never do that! So instead he walked around his parent's (Siva and Parvathi) hence he won the prize (I think a mango). That is all I know. I can't think of the friendships of Gods. BUt do you know about Rakhi? Rakhi is a holiday in India where girls give friendship bracelets to boys. Boys try to avoid girls on this day because if a boy gets a Rakhi, that means that girl is out of the league for marriage! Also if a girl gives a boy rakhi, he is expected to give her something in return. That's all for now. Hope it was helpful Jennifer ---- Begin Original Message ---- "Bill Rogers--Giveawayboy" <wondermagazine Mon, 24 Sep 2001 07:13:34 -0000 FRIENDSHIP: Repost Pardon my repost of this topic.
