reciting the name of god

i think that reciting god's names is one of the common sacred threads

running through all major religious bodies. i have really been made

aware of this today. first off i was made aware of the power of

names. this lady came in to return some books and she had them in a

bag marked JACOBSON'S. i guess there is some store called JACOBSON'S

here in town. She showed me the bag, so I got to SEE the word

JACOBSON'S on it, and then she also SAID JACOBSON'S in her

conversation, and I repeated it. Immediately I thought I was in an

auspicious moment, and I recalled that for us Jews and Christians,

our relationship w God is built upon a foundation of certain men:

Abraham, his son Isaac, and Isacc's son Jacob. So when I heard the

word JACOBSON'S I thought, who is this? Who is Jacob's son, and then

I realized that the spiritual tradition that came to Abraham was

passed on to his son Isaac and then Isaac passed that tradition down

to Jacob, and then from Jacob, that tradition got passed on to all

Jews and Christian throughout the ages, down to the present day. I

started to realize in some mystical way, I was Jacob's son. This

really got me focused on God. Later today, another woman came in to

order a book and when I asked her for her name, she said it was

JACOBSON. So, on the same day I have had two encounters with a name

that recalls my own spiritual patrimony. It was too mindblowing! As

if that wasn't enough, I ended up getting a cd today by Krishna Das,

which has an amazing song about Hanuman on it, that repeats the name

of Hanuman over and over. Also, I had read a book right before

finding it that talked about the meanings of the names of many Hindu

gods. Later I recalled the 108 names/titles of Ganesh and also the

Muslim 99 names of God. It just seems like such a powerful spiritual

exercise to recite the NAMES of God as it will create a supercharged

atmosphere of awareness and power in the NAME. Forgive my non-

scholarly approach to this. These are just my 'street' observations.

Peace, through the NAME of God, Bill

This was an interesting story. It is quite auspicious, I think!

There is another casette I recommend for Shiva, which recites Shiva's

name again and again and in other forms. It is called OM NAMAH

SHIVAYA by SP Balasubramanian. This is a famous song-- so to speak--

most temples in south India play this for sunrise and sunset. You

hear it whether you want to or not! But it is great!
