KARTIKEYA

Son of Shiva and Parvati, and brother of Ganesha, Kartikeya is the God of War.

Shiva his father is also identified with Agni the God of Fire. His heritage

gives him the daunting responsibility of defending all the Gods.

Katikeya has a bow and arrow slung across his back ready for war. He rides a

peacock and commands the celestial armies. He is known by many names, all with

the same meaning - fierce warrior, Skanda, Subramaniam and Murugun.

THanks for sharing this!

The last friday I was in India, Nov 30 was a major holiday in Tamil

Nadu called Karthik Deepam. After Diwali in South India many

festivals revolve around Murugan. There is a war, a marriage and

deepam. Really Karthik Deepam is the South Indian Diwali. Diwali is

also pronounced in Tamil Nadu as Deepawali. Deepa means light and

wali means row of. So mostly in North India (Rajat can correct me if

I am wrong) they light rows of lights for Diwali, but in S. India

they do this on karthik Deepam. Again deepa is there for light. We

went to a temple on this night, there they lit a medium size bonfire

and lit fire crackers from it. inside the temple each family carries

a bottle of oil and finding a few empty oil lamps light oil lamps.

You should light a lamp in front of every God in the temple, instead

we put drops of oil in to every lamp we could.
