Hi All

Just wanted to comment on Murugan

Many of these names for Murugan are popular in South India. The six

abodes of Murugan (each for something unique) are located in Tamil

Nadu, hence many festivals are celebrated for Murugan in Tamil Nadu.

The following:

> Since he has six faces, he is 'Shanmukha'.

This is pronounced Shanmugha. Sometimes an M is added to the end

(the form for peoples names) hence Shanmugam is a popular name in

Tamil Nadu.

There was a movie in Tamil called Aavai Shanmughi, a remake of Mrs.

Doubtfire! Basically it meant the 6 faces of an aunty.

Translated - shan ( I don't know meaning)

mugam means 'face'

litterally a six faced murugan is really translated in Tamil as

Azhumugam. or Arumugram. Aru means six. the R and ZH sound is the

same, but it is a sound unique only to Tamil. it is between an an l

and flat r sound. Usually only Brahmins say it 'correctly' others

pronounce the sound as L. Once in Madras I had to take a bus to

Vadapazhani. (pazhani also is spelled palani, one of the six abodes

of Murugan, and hence even Vadapazhani has a famous Murugan temple)

and told the conducter Vadapazhani and not Vadapalani. He couldn't

Understand!

Just fyi. Will find out what 'shan' means.
