In case you are unfamiliar with this term - Maha means great - siva is god (Ganesha's Father - on of the Hindu trinity - Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu), and ratri means Night. Devotees stay up all day and night in a fast and chant mantras to Lord Siva. This festival is important for women. Unmarried women chant mantras to get a good husband.
