This is a cross post from our Tantrism Group where I'd posted the question about

Ganesh's trunk in hope of sourcing information for us here. Here's a response

(scroll below) from one of Tantrism's moderators "Dragon" (thank you Dragon!).

Vanakam Sy and Barbara, I've read a couple of different *theories* on the

positioning of Sri Ganesha's trunk. One is that the position of the trunk -

left, right, center (down) or up, relate to the major nadis and the 1000 PL;

Ida (lunar/right/feminine), Pingala (solar/left/masculine), Sushumna and

Sahashrara (up). There seems to be a lot of confusion about which side Ida and

Pingala are on, on the Web. This is because (according to what I've learned)

Pingala starts at the left testicle/ovary and exits the body through the right

nostril. The opposite is true for Ida - from right to left. And, based on the

fact that they twine around Sushumna to meet at Ajna, this seems to me to be a

distinct probability, if not true. (Haven't gotten to the point of seeing for

myself yet.) Anyway, it would seem that their point of beginning determines

the side, not the point of exit for the breath. The other theory is that right

or left corresponds with the swastika, which as a yantra represents regency of

the four corners of space (Lord over All). Which way the arms are bent tell if

it is the sigil of the right-hand path or the left-hand path. Also, it is said

that the right facing swastika represents the male material element (Shiva) and

creation; the left facing swastika represents the female dynamic energy power

(Shakti) - as well as dissolution. Knowing the difference between the two

paths and the static and dynamic elements, I would say that there most

definitely would be a difference in the way the two different rupas are

worshipped. But, what that may be I couldn't tell ya. All that I find are

mysterious statements that the rupa with the right bending trunk should be

worshipped differently than the rupa with the left-bending trunk - with no

further explanations. Perhaps someone else knows the secret, here? Om Shanti,

Dragon

Namaste Barbara,

The pleasure is very much mine. There may be a couple more responses

on the Tantrism List about Ganesh's trunk - I'll check in there soon

and forward them over here. I'll tell Dragon "thanks" (she's a great

lady) from you.
