Dumbo's companion and conscience was Timothy, the circus mouse -- and

Ganesha has his faithful mouse vehicle always nearby...

I have a sweatshirt with an image of Ganesha on it. He's seated on

cushions, a crown on his head, his mouse waiting respectfully at his

feet. A Dominican neighbor saw me crossing the street in this sweatsirt,

smiled broadly, and said, "Ay, el Rey Babar!" (Hey! King Babar!)

Babar the elephant king is another elephant hero of a series of

illustrated children's books, more popular in Europe.

What burns my buttocks, however, are Westerners who insist that Ganesha

"is an elephant." A lady-friend once bought me a small statue of an

elephant, saying, "I know you like Ganesha, so I bought you this

elephant." I thanked her, and next time we met, I had a gift for her.

"I know you like mermaids," I said, "so I bought your this statue of a

fish..."

I agree with you about the schmucks who can't tell the difference between an

elephant and an expression of divinity. Gawd...loved the fish story...
