Many spiritual cultures use the bell as a wake up call.Bells were in the past a communication system between towns. They had a language code and each town could send messages of warning or whatever to the neighbouring towns by ringing them in a particular way.In my personal experience, the sound of bells goes directly to the conciousness, its like a wake up call.Buddhist use the gantha, the bell to perform rituals. Ganthas have at the point of the bell a representation of Goddess Prajnaparamita, the holder of the great wisdom (Heart Sutra-Prajnaparamita).Althought I am not an expert I imagine that ringing the bell in Buddhism must connect us with the essence of the prajnaparamita. The use of the gantha and the vajra(dorje) is a combination of prajnaparamita and the diamondlike cutter that puts wisdom in action...But that´s my personal idea, here is a more detailed explanation of the use of the Bell and the vajrahttp://www.tibet.com/Buddhism/3objects.html Finance - Get real-time stock quotes
Guest guest
The bell that links with my dorje has "chowa". That is, the metals have been blended together so well that, once rung, the bell keeps toning for some moments. If one holds the toning bell to one's lips and mouths, say, "OM", the bell will start toning "OM". Or any other mantra...it's quite an awakening sound, to hear OM coming from the bell's toning... But the essence is to hear the tone and follow its vanishing into Beyond...(BTW, NEVER leave the hand-bells in sunlight - which dulls their tone) The bells that are like silver salad bowls are another trip altogether. A whole book has been written about them. And of course in our day there are the bowl-bells made out of ground quartz crystal...these must be used with care...while their sound is gorgeous and penetrating...it CAN make another glassine-like object shatter...or so I've been told...I use mine only on New Year's Eve.... aqesa wrote: Althought I am not an expert I imagine that ringing the bell in Buddhism must connect us with the essence of the prajnaparamita. The use of the gantha and the vajra(dorje) is a combination of prajnaparamita and the diamondlike cutter that puts wisdom in action...But that´s my personal idea, here is a more detailed explanation of the use of the Bell and the vajrahttp://www.tibet.com/Buddhism/3objects.htmlTo from this group, send an email to:-http://www.geocities.com/aumganesh/ Your use of is subject to the Finance - Get real-time stock quotes
