Well, Sy, if the murthi is made of unbaked clay (or papier mache, or is a

painted image) bathing it will cause it to melt, or look pretty

bedraggled.

 

Such images that are not waterproof are not themselves bathed. A mirror

is used to catch the reflection, and the reflected image is sprinkled!

 

On the other hand, most "Ganges clay" images (become popular for import

to the USA) are meant for only temporary worship, and at the end of the

festival are to be immersed in the nearest river...
