I've always found it interesting that in West Bengal, the night before

Deepavali is celebrated as Kali Puja day. You have to pass through the

Dark Mother (Kali) to discover the Bright Mother (Lakshmi).

 

Also, Kali's tenth MahaVidya form is Kamala, the Lotus Lady, a form of

Lakshmi. And Lakshmi accompanies Vishnu's tenth avatar Kalki as his

consort, BhadraKali. So on some level, fierce Kali and gentle Lakshmi

are two sides of the same coin.
