Guest guest
Just a few months after we saw the flooding in Mumbai, India; there are images of the flooding in Europe- but all are overshadowed by the large-scale tragedy of the people of Louisiansa, Mississippi and the surrounding areas. Many people are watching the heart-rending images of children and adults suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. People in many parts of the world, seeing the images or hearing the account of the destruction, are blaming the American government: why was more not done, and in a more timely manner? Katrina hit us in Miami as a Category 1 storm two days before it hit Louisiana and Mississippi as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane. As we sat through days of no electricity or petrol for cars; flooding and uprooted trees; schools shut and roof damage- we feared what something that was so powerful as Category 1, would wreak as a Category 5. It was unimaginable then...and is unfathomable now that is has happened. A hurricane is always a hurricane of emotions- there are emotions before: as we watch for the storm; during the storm as we fear the flood, are thrilled or terrified by the thunderous forces of nature; and the aftermath as people suffer through the clearing , discomfort and disrupted lifestyles. From a spiritual perspective, a hurricane arises from the harmful emotions in us all, rising and storming so they can be cleared. So : how do we conduct ourselves in crisis - when we, or people we hear about, are facing a hurricane, do we look answers from a higher power? Do we keep clearing fear and panic? Can we prepare while inwardly remaining calm? Can we face the aftermath and remain conscious of inner peace and harmony? Can we feel compassion, perform acts of charity, accept our anger or disappointment against government, against fate, while inwardly sending healing to the situation, and linking to the highest truth and the highest good? When faced with our own anger, fear and frustration, do we look for answers, start to become part of the solution, or do we enhance the problem? When Shiva cut off the head of Ganesh, how much focus did Shiva and Parvati give to berating each other and how much, to creating Ganapati as millions know and venerate him today? It is in times of crisis that our essence is revealed. What is our perspective? What is our focus? Do we have the heart for healing or for wailing?
