Eight-year-old Aditya Thankur, son of the embassy´s administrative assistant

Sanjay Thankur, was the youngest singer of the day, offering a heartfelt

rendition of the Indian Boy Scout anthem. After the program, guests were

invited to share a cup of warm Darjeeling tea and fresh vegetable samosas in

the embassy´s garden. Although India gained independence from British rule on

Aug. 15, 1947, it was not until two and a half years later, on Jan. 26, 1950,

that the country became a republic with the confirmation of its constitution.
