Many saints and great men maintain their body and mind intact with the help of yoga. It is said that by practising yoga, one can even avoid death. It works on all aspects of the person: physical, pranic (relating to vital energy), mental, emotional, psychic and spiritual. The root word of yoga is ?yuj? which means ?to join? or ?to unite?. So yoga means union or unity. In spiritual terms, it is described as the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. Yoga is a means of balancing and harmonising the body, mind and emotion. The science of yoga begins to work on the outmost aspect of the personality, the physical body, which for most people is a practical and familiar starting point. When imbalance is experienced at this level, the organs, muscles and nerves no longer function in harmony, rather they act in opposition to each other. So the practice of yoga begins from the physical level and then moves on to a more subtler level: pranic, mental and emotional, according to yoga experts. Yoga is an integration and harmony between thought, word and deed. Hence, yoga makes one disciplined, hopeful about life and develop positive attitudes. So it is useful to all. As such, a weeklong yoga training was jointly organised by the Armed Police Family Women Association and Central Office Armed Police Force Human Resource Development Department, in which 25 Armed Police Staff and family members participated. In the training that concluded the other day, speakers highlighted the importance of yoga in one?s life, saying that yoga helps attain health and happiness. The growing violence in the Kingdom has resulted in growing mental pressure not only to the security personnel and their families but also to the common people. As such, yoga should surely help one to reduce mental tension if yoga is practised daily. Indeed, such training programme should be provided to other security personnel currently dedicating their lives for the security of the people and public property and their families, so as to develop positive feelings about their own lives and duties. Similarly, such training needs to be extended to the civil servants, as yoga will at least discourage them from involving in corrupt practices. Of course, efforts need to be made to make yoga popular as it is useful to all. http://www.gorkhapatra.org.np/pageloader.php? file=2006/04/08/editorial/editorial4
