Guest guest
Hi to All This one is a real one - due to strike tomorrow, 26th April. If you want to be absolutely sure that it is not lying dormant in your system, there is a handy little utility available from http://www.download.com called CleanCIH - file size 17K. Simply download this, close all your programs, and run - it only takes a minute. CIH once activated will trash your system. Sat Nam! Guest guest
Gordon, Send out just before midnight of 25 April, unfortunately your email reached me too late. I received it only today--- 27 April. My computer had already crashed just after midnight i.e. on the early hours of 26 April. and unable to boot up. Motherboard destroyed. I spend a whole day and US$100 to replace it. Countless thousands of people in Singapore, and neighbouring countries suffered the same fate, including having their CPU, motherboard and ram chips completely destroyed. This includes corporate computers. I believe it is a worldwide problem. Much talk went out on Melissa and Happy 99 but the warnings given out on Chernobyl seemed not to have matched its viciousness and hence many were caught unawares. In any case if it is going to strike every 26th of every month, your warning is still very helpful. All readers please take it seriously: this virus is very real and vicious. Do something to protect your computers now!!!! Who's the mischievous devil behind all these, causing so much suffering. At that rate, if more such vicious viruses are spread around the Internet, many will squirm at the idea of surfing the Net and emailing. Guest guest
Hi all, I've hard days recreating damaged information - and let's believe to me - near to 100% of information could be retrieved (in many cases)... No need to change motherboards - its enough to rewrite BIOS data (for some kind of computers). The virus don't destroy CPU, chips and so... So more wrong it's about it... And I can answer (to question below): THAT'S MANKIND NATURE... That's that devil... Anyway, the meditation can help..... It helps don't worry more about problems of computers... -Jonas- >Who's the mischievous devil behind all these, causing so much suffering. Guest guest
Ken: I am sorry to hear about your computer. Chernobyl is a deadly virus. It seems to have hit overseas more than it did here in North America. I had the patch but still worried Monday morning. The virus has been known for quite a while here so a lot of virus updates had the fix built into it. What it has taught me is to go to Norton's site and download the updated virus definitions more frequently :/ Glad to have you back with us, Nemaste, Susan
Guest guest
For those who believe that the CIH Virus would not harm their cpu, motherboard and ram, please rethink again and read up what at the site that Gordon recommended http://www.download.com . There are few variety of this virus. After downloading the anti Virus software and run it in my newly repaired computer, the virus was still detected in my files saved in floppies and it propagates itself very quickly. I spent a few hours at the computer vendor repair shop to get my computer fixed. A stream of customers both called and came in with their computers with the same problems, which is nothing compared to more than 1000 cases in a day as reported by Hewlett Packard. The engineer explained that indeed the virus can do such damage, such as sending commands to the CPU to increase the current. For that matter the BIOS data was destroyed through such software commands and no BIOS manufacturer here would sell you just the BIOS chip. In any case, there was already a few cases in that shop of all these parts destroyed. In all cases , the hard disk data were whipped out within seconds. This the engineer said was done with a simple command called FDISK , which is familiar to most computer users. I dont' know how valid the claim that human nature is evil. But really you just need a dozen or so of such malicious but professionally trained individuals spreading viruses as vicious as CIH to wreck out the future of the Internet or even computing. Thankfully, the situation is still controllable for now, that is. Complacency towards the danger of abused technology can be deadly for mankind. The y2k thing is another worry. Sorry for this long message but it is important that precautions be taken on this virus. It won't go away by not worrying about it, something which I also thought would never strike me, with all the constant hype about viruses and what with having installed and ran a well-known a fairly up-to-date anti-virus program prior to the the crash. That program said no virus detected! Guest guest
I don't know if this is considered off topic, but I had to respond because I was so disturbed by someone's comment that the nature of humankind is the 'devil'. On Wed, 28 Apr 1999 09:02:44 Ken wrote: >"Ken" <goods >I dont' know how valid the claim that human nature is evil< I have to agree- I don't think it's a valid claim either. It's a pretty harsh judgemennt to say anybody is evil, in anyway. People who hurt others and themselves do so because of psychological reasons, often biochemical, and perhaps even psychological reasons brought forth from other lives. Many people in this world are in a lot of pain. Unfortunately, if the pain is too great and there is no realization that there can be change, it sometimes turns into malicious or even deadly behaviour. But if I can heal from the life I used to live, then anyone can. People probably thought of me as evil at times. They were wrong. I was in pain and hurting. I don't believe in the concept of evil, nor do I believe in any kind of evil entity. Plain enough, I simply don't believe evil exists- unless it is another word for extreme imbalance. I see it as a human concept which, all all too often let's people out of responsibility for their actions. We have free will, and when we want to be good, we can be very good. When we want to be bad, we can be very bad. And when we want to be Godly, we can do that to. Guest guest
I have posted two emails as follow-ups on Gordon's CIH virus alert. I have not thought of posting any message on this rather active mailing list as I have my own mental yoga mailing list to handle . However when the CIH virus struck home, I felt that side issues on computer viruses given out by Gordon are actually appropriate. Let us discuss yoga but let us be aware why we are all doing this, lest we lose our bearing in a world that is actually quite dangerous to live in, where a press of a keyboard button can cause untold damage. Ultimately, Yoga is to awaken us -- and thus to make us more aware of various issues. This is what I eventually conclude Yoga to be. Living in a state of sheer survival-driven impulses without concern for the environment (social and natural) is anti-yoga. Yogis succeed in their quest for self-realization because they first care. That caring is really an act of expansion of their consciousness on the higher level of their psyche. However caring comes first from awareness of real issues such as mismanaged & abused computer technology. The Y2K problem appears to be more serious than people recognise with speculation that nuclear missiles controlled by outdated programmes could go haywire. There is in fact already a true case in the news last year of a Russian rocket exploding during lift-off because the computer programme was not updated. By increasing our caring and hence awareness, a collective force is generated in the atmosphere that can move certain key individuals to take the appropriate actions to prevent any Y2K disasters. ken ________
