Hello,

I just joined this list a couple of days ago. I've been doing zazen

practice and studying aikido for a number of years. I've also practiced

Hatha Yoga on and off. The type of meditation I've done has been very

helpful in many ways, but I seem to be at a plateau. I've been thinking

that more direct energy work would be helpful, so I'd appreciate any advice

on getting started practicing kundalini yoga.

I've found a list of local teachers (Albuquerque, New Mexico), and I'll be

contacting one of them in the next week or so.

Thanks in advance,

Lonnie

Hi Lonnie

Welcome to Kundalini Yoga.

You have largely answered your own question - the best way to get started is

certainly to go to local classes - for those who have them available.

Kundalini Yoga is better practised in a group for several reasons - firstly

the teacher can keep an eye on what everyone is doing and making sure that

things such as posture, breathing and movement are correct - it is very easy

to get into bad habits working by yourself from a book at home - I know from

experience - I had been doing so for 11 months, relying mainly on the

occasional phone call to a teacher 400 miles from me for anything of which I

was not sure. I attended my first classes last weekend - at a weekend

workshop organised by the Karam Kriya School in Chelmsford near London. For

me it was a revelation - I learned so much in a very intensive two days, and

I have a much better focus on where I am going with this.

Secondly, you get the benefit of group energy - 10 people chanting mantras

together can have 100 times the effect of 1 person doing it alone. When you

experience it you will know exactly what I mean.

Thirdly, Kundalini is a very powerful force - it is best to be introduced to

it gradually - this is best accomplished under the guidance of a qualified

teacher.

Lastly, you have others around you to lend mutual support - it can get

pretty tough at times.

I hope you enjoy your classes. Please come back on here and let us all know

how you get on.

Sat Nam!

Gordon

Dear Lonnie,

You are in a great place to get started with KY. Ask one of your local

teachers about the Summer Solstice celebration in Espanola June 17-26.

Wow. You are right there. It is a not to be missed event. Let me know if

you are going and we can meet.

Hello Rattana,

Sorry to wait so long to answer your post; I wasn't sure whether I'd

be able to go to the Summer Solstice Festival. It's looking like

business obligations are going to make it difficult to go for more

than a day. Is it possible to go for particular classes or events?

Best,

Lonnie
