After reading your post to Ali, I'm also quite interested in your answer to that question. >> Yes, I understand, but I think that these things go together, unless one limits the question to "training partner" of which I have had the unique experience of having a very skilled Tantra Partner who was Japanese and understood the most subtle nuances of feeling, motion, focus and coordination. I was fortunate in that this training occurred when I was very young, in my early twenties. It provided me with a baseline of experience and control that was exceptional...as (no harm intended here) most young men have little skill, little restraint or control and rarely seek to find the harmony of their partner as a preeminent technique. Since my trainer had been involved in both Buddhist, Martial Arts and 3HO, I think I was most fortunate. If there are 3HO centers near your area, you might wish to meet others there and ask their recommendations regarding classes, programs and activities where you might meet people that would be willing to share such training with you. Guest guest
Zenbob - I'm not looking for a Tantra teacher myself. My concern, actually, was that while you were very careful to warn Ali about younger males who would only be looking for an exciting sexual adventure, you didn't mention what in MY experience as a woman has been a much greater problem - that OLDER males are very eager to offer themselves as "skilled, experienced partners" - expecially to young people of college age, as Ali seems to be. "I'm a Tantric sex master" has got to be one of the oldest metaphysical pick up lines in the book.

Why didn't I ever use that line? Heck, at least I had some basic background...LOL I think this is a sad, but true concern. Perhaps there is no absolute "litmus" test of genuine selfless instructors...but an instructor needs to have a solid reputation and should be eager to instruct and assist and reluctant to become physically involved. Therein lies the trap of attachment and complications that are all too well known. "Do as I suggest...do not do with me" might be a motto. Then seek a teacher, and remain unnattached to the result of any ONE person having the answers you seek. >> Dear Siobhan: My how that name is like a song in my heart. Don't know exactly why, but I get electrical tingles when I hear it. I have some strange Celtic link that I cannot fully fathom, being Swiss Italian German...I just don't know...but I am a bit of a Druid at heart...poetry, stories, teaching all appeal to me. Your thoughtful and detailed response was superb. I am going to keep this in my files and utilize this as a much valued resource. I find that students value the words of others often more than from their own teacher alone...and rightly so, particularly if the teacher makes a point of discouraging the type of worshipful attitudes so often common in these relationships. Finally, another thought has occurred to me. Could a good teacher instruct by using video of proper techniques, also use volunteer partners in a class to demonstrate posture and general techniques, thereby basically avoiding the direct conflict of "one on one" teaching when it comes to the specific areas of sexual contact or union? I know, this takes all the joy out of teaching and now it's just "work, work, work" like any other job. LOL Your views and sincere feelings are most welcome...and I am expressing that to the entire group. I also realize, that like all things, should a student and a teacher who are both adults and respectful of one another, choose to enter into a very physical and sexually based relationship in order to further develop...and that both are clearly aware of the "risks" and "benefits" that this should not be considered, by itself some terrible thing. It is, as Siobhan so eloquently stated, easily abused and usually it is the younger, less experienced and idealistic student (often female) who is injured emotionally and otherwise. Hey, we could produce our own series of videos... Any volunteers? I know several highly esteemed Tantra Masters... )) Blessings Love, Zenbob
Guest guest
Dear Zenbob, Alex, et al, Funny this topic should be arising as there is a long article this month in Yoga Journal about the power issues involved in teaching yoga. Because it is a spiritual practice, it is easy for students to deify their teachers/gurus, and easy for flawed/complicated, i.e. "human" teachers to enjoy the power rush. Problems can ensue for both parties! What I've learned from experience, is that putting any teacher on a pedestal is bound to be harmful to both the teacher and the student. In fact, assigning any human being superhuman qualities, or the title of "perfect" is going to lead to trouble. It's like Rattana said in her email yesterday "Giving and Receiving:" human relationships are about balance and "The more conscious we become, the more possible it is to consciously choose a path of alignment and balance." The more you know yourself, accept yourself as a fluid balance of inner goodness and practical failings, you will be better able to judge the intentions and clear mindedness of others. If you are not blinded by the false hope of a quick fix (so sorry for the pun) from someone else, then you will be able to see imposters for what they are. Also, you can accept the right-intentioned teachers for who they are, and not lay the burden of your enlightenment in their hands. The people who have hindered me most in my life have been those who desired that I see them, and myself, as perfect (in the Western sense! not in the sense that everything is perfect as it is, and that we each have goodness within). The beings who have aided me most are those who do not expect me to be anything but myself, and who know themselves to have both expertise and limitations (goodness and flaws)...who are both humble and knowlegeable. In other words, tantric student, know thyself! Then seek a teacher, and remain unnattached to the result of any ONE person having the answers you seek. Sat Nam, Siobhan p.s to Zenbob...I very much enjoyed your "explanations" of love and sex yesterday. The Tantric sex masters of the world should learn them. --- ZEN2WRK wrote: > ZEN2WRK > > In a message dated 9/8/99 6:42:05 AM Pacific Daylight Time, > Sokoloff writes: > > << "I'm a Tantric sex master" has got to be one of the oldest > metaphysical > pick up lines in the book. > >> > Dear Alex: > > You are so very right! Guest guest
Dear Siobhan, Sat Nam. Thank you for sharing your clear and inspiring summary of the topic of being a human-teacher and a human-student. These are lessons we all seem to be confronted with. Your words are wise.
