Guest guest
Hi to All, For those of you who have been unwillingly d last week to the RamakrishnaVedanta mailing list, or who have merely been following the case with interest, I am attaching with this mail copies of correspondence that I exchanged with M Laurent, the owner of the other list. I think it is self-explanatory, and didn't find his excuses particularly plausible or watertight. Sat Nam! I am sorry, but what you did was not easily excusable. It is equivalent to kidnap in real life. The Net is voluntary - folk to mailing lists because they want to, and they participate in them because they want to. You can't just take a whole host of e-mail addresses and decide on their behalf that the owners of them are going to be a part of your community whether they want to or not, and then threaten them with bad karma should they decide to decline your hospitality. Apart from moral issues, there is also the matter of trust and confidence. It has taken us a long time to get Kundalini Yoga to the level it is at now, with 300+ rs and regular active participation. If people think that every time they post they risk having their addresses copied and being d to lists elsewhere without their permission, how many of them do you think will continue to post? What you did was a threat to the rights and freedom, both of the individual and also of the collective which is our community. That explains the reaction you have provoked - somewhat akin to disturbing a hornets nest I would think. The Internet presents a challenge to us all, both newcomers and those of us who have been on it since before it became so widely known and used. I only hope you have benefited from this experience, and will go about your future dealings on here in a more circumspect, respectful and understanding way.
