Guest guest Posted January 6, 2000 Report Share Posted January 6, 2000 I have a question .......i want to be a full spirited person .....and enlightened .....but my parents are very closed minded when it comes to me ........ if i try to change my style or whatever their never ..openminded to that ....they always ..blame it on my friends ...or something like that ..and they still think im a child ....but im 17 and goin to college this fall .......my friends are the coolest friends ...they dress how they feel about things ....they dress appropriate ......and are very open minded to new ideas etc . my mom always has something to say ......and thinks shes right and never heres me out ......and my dads in his own world .....its hard to be ur own person when ur mom especailly thinks ur copying from ur friends .........this is really pissing me off .....and i always result in using valgor language to solve my problems .......if u think you can help me pleaaaaaassssee !!!! respond PEAcE & LoVe BYRD 182 "Give PEACE a chance " "Living is easy with eyes closed.....misunderstanding all you see , its getting hard to be someone but it all works out .......it doesnt matter much to me ..." I slowly opened them up by giving them spiritual books on the things they are interested in. For example since they are Baptist I let them read a book about the lost years of Jesus. Then after that I gave them books about life after death and how wonderful it is to "be". I then talked to a Psychic and she told my that and Indian my grandpa(part Indian) was sorry he was never around his father. I told my dad this and it shocked him. You see my grandpa is really an Indian and a Pullman Porter in the early 1900's, he was never around his children as much as he wanted to be. He started crying when I told him this. So as you see, you have to show them slowly that things like this aren't bad. I grew up thinking spiritual things was bad. Many people grew up like this and only few see the light. Open them up by "making" them watch a spiritual movie like the 6th Sense. Don't show them the cover and the title of the movie. Guest guest Posted January 9, 2000 Report Share Posted January 9, 2000 Your cry for understanding reminds me of an old Cat Stevens song, "Father and Son." I listened to that song a lot in the early 70's when I was in college. I didn't know why I liked it so much. It was soothing even though it didn't seem to affect my stormy relationship with my folks cause they still urked the hell out of me. Parental/child conflict seems to be our way of establishing our own identity. Because our folks are the ones who support us they feel compelled to "do what's right" and they will voice their opinions "for our own good. It was only in my 30's that I realized that they did the best they could for me even though it wasn't all perfect. Now they've passed on and I feel greatful to have had a mother who loved me and taught me how to sincerely care about others as well as a father who sent me to college and gave me a very stable home to grow up in. I don't think there is one answer for you on what you can do to make your parents be what you want them to be or vice/versa. Cultivating compassion by imagining what they are feeling may help. Perhaps your longing is the first step for a change in this relationship. As the I Ching says "Perserverance Furthers."
