Guest guest
I know that yoga and meditation have a tremendous effect on keeping me out of depression. I think the biggest thing for mental health is exercise, relaxation, better nutrition and spiritual growth. I went through severe depression a little over a year ago. I didn't start doing yoga until after the depression was under control. I can only speak from my experience. If they are going through severe depression, suggest they see a doctor (yes, an M.D. or psychiatrist). I believe that under some circumstances, medication is needed to pull out of the depression. I really struggled w/ getting on anti-depressants and I put it off until I was so depressed that I literally could not function in my life. Anti-depressants made it possible for me to get out of the depression and clear my head so I could make the positive changes necessary to keep me from becoming that depressed again. If these people don't come out of it soon, definately suggest a doctor--one that will support them getting off the anti-depressants as soon as possible, too. I suffered from the hell of despression, plus criticism from friends that I wasn't being "all natural". It was very difficult. I'm in the process of reducing my dosages until I'm compeltely off. Also, for less severe depression, there is St. John's Wort. Just make sure they know that they'll be more sensitive to sun when they are on it and it has to be taken every day to work. Guest guest
Dear Nirmal Kaur, I think Jeannette had a good point. Just do KY on a regular basis and one starts to feel better. Depression is related to the heart and the lungs. Any heart openers are good. There are lots in Transitions to a Heart Centered World. Alternate breathing is good because it creates mental and emotional balance and it is easy to do. Try starting the class with alternate breathing for 5-11 minutes. Let me know what happens. My students love it. Give them the meditation that they want to do. Do several in a series of classes and let them pick their favorite. It will differ for each one. Take out the wheel and substitute cobra or camel if they can do it. Don't have them do anything they can't do. Sat Nam, RAttana > I have several students in my class who battle with depression. Guest guest
>>> <rattanak Take out the wheel and substitute cobra or camel if they can do it.>>> I know the shoulder stand is excellent for alleviating depression. Yet I wonder if this position is used in kundalini yoga? Is it? I never did it in Kundalini class, but I have in hatha. Angie
Guest guest
When I was depressed, I found SAM-e very effective. Unfortunately, it is quite expensive and I found I had to take a lot of it. It is available at health food stores, and many sites on the web. However, the best thing for me in terms of depression is kundalini Yoga! Sat nam Kartar kaur
Guest guest
Sat Nam, Shoulder stand is done in KY and is in some of the sets. I personally don't teach it much because it has to be done correctly to not hurt the neck. And most people have a hard time doing it correctly. Hi Rattana What is the correct way to do shoulder stand, and what is it that folk do that can cause neck problems? I'm sure that others apart from myself would like to know more about this. Sat Nam! Guest guest
Dear Muhammed!!!!!! I've had all of the above. I know about depression and my family has suffered from it. What I am doing for myself which works is St. John's Wort. It has taken three weeks for the effects to kick in. After feeling the results, I also exercised in the gym such as the treadmill which gave me a sense of well being. Give yourself unlimited compassion. Guest guest
Dear Muhammed : The symptoms that you mention are normal side-effects of depression, and the best and safest treatment for depression that I am aware of is a combination of 5-HTP (Hydroxy Tryptophan, an amino acid) and St. John's Wort (botanical). These are available in health food stores, often in combination because they work in a synergistic way. There are also yoga sets that are helpful for depression - Gururrattan's "Relax and Renew" has several. There are numerous co-factors for depression including poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, cigarettes, high blood pressure - anything you do to alter these risk factors will also help. Many blessings, Sadhant Singh
Guest guest
Hi Sadhant Singh, Could you tell me the frequency and combination of 5-HTP and St. John's Wort that you use in combating depression? Thank you, Nancy Sadhant Singh wrote: Dear Muhammed : > > The symptoms that you mention are normal side-effects of depression, > and the best and safest treatment for depression that I am aware of > is a combination of 5-HTP (Hydroxy Tryptophan, an amino acid) and St. > John's Wort (botanical). Guest guest
Dear Nancy: A standard daily dosage is: 50 mg. 5-HTP 10 mg. St. John's Wort 15 mg. vitamin B6 B6 is a co-factor for serotonin production - that is, when present your body will make more serotonin. I have read about dosages up to 100 mg. of 5-HTP and 900 mg of St, John's Wort, but those were based on using them separately. They are synergistic (work together for greater benefit), and the above is an effective dose for most people. If it doesn't seem to be helping after a few weeks, you could increase the dose by 50 to 100%. Love & blessings, Sadhant
