Sat Nam,

Greetings to all. I want to thank those of you who responded to my post

regarding kundalini yoga as a pure art (without incorporating other

teachings i.e. "new age"). Gururattan, the clarity of your response was

very helpful to me.

In regards to the topic of drugs and KY, Michael (Skylined) and Adam (Hoyt),

I am curious if you are familiar with the book "Be Here Now" by Guru Ram

Dass. In his autobiography he speaks candidly about his experimenting with

drugs, particularly psylocybin. It is a book I am reading now, and believe

it might be of some interest to you both. What I take from reading his

experiences is that although the effects of these drugs are indeed real as

you are saying, they are not necessary for enlightenment. As I am gaining a

tremendous amount of respect for Yogi Bhajan, I take his warning of its

detrimental effects seriously. There are lectures by Ram Dass available on

tape from his website if you wanted to check those out too. I do not know

specifically what his relationship to KY is, but I know there is a mantra

which incorporates his name given in the book "Sadhana Guidelines".

Blessings and peace,

Lisa

Hi Lisa

I don't think that the original Guru Ram Das would have had a Web Site! ;-)

He was one of the founding fathers (if that is the correct tem) of Sikhism.

hi folks....

think people are confusing Baba Ram Dass... with Guru Ram Das.....

i would like to learn more about Guru Ram Das.... i chant every week

Guru Guru, Guru Wahe Guru, Guru Ram Das Guru...

and never really thought or knew about the actually meaning other than

the vibrations caused by chanting this felt good....

Baba Ram Dass is actually a westerner (Richard Alpert) who founded

Brandeis University in Massachusetts.....and was a proffessor at Harvard...

he was probably best known in the 60s for his experimentations with LSD and

other psychedelics with Timothy Leary....then he traveled to India where he

studied under a indian teacher (forgot name)and recieved the name "Baba Ram

Dass" which means "disciple of God"realised, much like many folks who went

out to India (Donovan, Mike Love)

that drugs were not needed to reach the transcient states that meditation

could

bring to you..... or bring you to.. more like it.... and infact the drugs

were more

of a hinderence to reaching that "pure" enlightened state...

IMHO... if you reach any "enlightened" state while under the influence of

something other than what is already in your own chemistry... it is pure

illusion....

and not ultimate reality....

but why should i speak... since i know "nothing" <smile>

Love and Light

Hi Lisa, I was so fortunate that one beautiful summer day, (when "Be here

now" was first published)as I

was sitting on the beach observing the majesty of the North Atlantic pounding on

the Fire Island shore, a

friend,(Jerry) handed me his paperback copy. It was about 8" 10". I sat there

for hours until the sun went

down, and finished the book. Needless to say, it had a profound effect! I have

entered "Ram Dass" into the

search enjine and been astounded at the amount of information regarding this

Great Teacher! ( Thanks

Jerry:-) Mike in Dallas Y'all

Haven't read it, but it sounds like something I should look in to.

I agree with that. My use of substances has been mostly as a source of

inspiration and more recently with the intention to develop myself to the

point where they are no longer useful. As I wrote this I did a search on Ram

Das and found this excerpt which sums up the way I feel:

"And he [indian holy man Maharaj-ji] said these substances were known in the

Kulu Valley, long ago, but all that knowledge is lost now. Then he said,

"It's useful, it's useful, not the true samadhi, but it's useful." Then

later when questioned about LSD by some young Westerners that were with him,

he said, "If you're in a cool place and you're quiet and you're feeling much

peace and your mind is turned toward God, it's useful." He said it will

allow you to come in and have a visit-the saint, of a higher being of a

higher space-higher consciousness is how you can translate it. But he says

you can't stay there-after a couple of hours you gotta come back. He said,

you know, it would be much better to become the saint, rather than go and

have this visit; but having this visit is nice. He said it strengthens your

faith in the possibility that such beings exist. At the time he used Christ

as the saint he was talking about. He said it allows you to have the visit

of Christ but you can't stay with him. It would be better to become Christ

than to visit, and LSD won't do that for you. He said it will strengthen

your faith, but it won't make you into that. He said love is a much stronger

drug than LSD medicine. " - The only Dance there is.

Well having recently had a very intense experience, I am beginning to

reconsider my course of action. I've been conducting 'sessions' where I

combine KY with lsd and devote the whole day to focussing on the divine.

Each session has been exponentially more intense then the last. During my

last, the currents and surges I experienced where so intense I had to hold

my breath at full capacity to keep my body from going into violent tremors

and forcibly clench my jaw to keep it still. This didn't bother me at the

time as the experience was entirely blissful and the surges only came on

when I relaxed and concentrated on my chakras, but I have since decided that

to continue in such a manner may be to hazardous.
