Guest guest
Hi All, I just received an old sheepskin as a gift. Can someone please tell me what is the best way to clean it? It is very dusty. Thank you. Gary
Guest guest
There are several of us who are animal advocates, and we cannot understand why we use a sheepskin. Isn't it contradictory to the sutras of non-harming and non-hurting, which is one of the many reasons we don't eat meat? My students question this all the time. Thanks, Nirmal Kaur
Guest guest
Hello Gary, Found this info out for you.... ~!~~~~ To clean your sheepskin ~~ Wool-lite by hand! don't put in the washer or use too hot of wateras it will totally ruin it. The expensive alternative is dry cleaning. Sat Nam Zeta . - "Gary Giamboi" <ggiamboi <Kundaliniyoga > Monday, May 08, 2000 9:05 AM Sheepskin > Hi All, > I just received an old sheepskin as a gift. Guest guest
Sat Nam, Washing sheepskins--I wash mine in the washer, cold water, woolite or coldwater soap. Never suddsy soap. Then I put them in the dryer on cold to fluff it up and then dry it on the line. Some people put almond oil on the back before washing to prevent stiffness. The well cured ones don't need it. They are pretty durable. Ethics--this question comes up a lot. The sheep were not killed for their skins. We are not involved in killing these animals. We do pray for their souls and help liberate them from the pain they have suffered. My experience is that they like their skins to be used for meditation. If this is not your mindset or experience than choose another natural fiber mat to meditate on. Sat Nam, Gururattan Kaur
Guest guest
Dear Gururattan, Zeta and All, Thank you all for your responses. I will try the woolite method and if I feel adventurous, I'll try the ginger bread also. I am fortunate to have received this from a very good man. I think it is appropriate to assume it does not come with any negative karma. Sat Nam, Gary
Guest guest
Sat Nam, Gururattan, I have sheepskins that I bought in New Zealand and would like to use them for yoga but don't want them to get matted down. Will they? Does washing them refresh them to their original, fluffy state? Thank you. /Karen Gururattan K.Khalsa [rattanak] Monday, May 08, 2000 5:46 PM Kundaliniyoga Re: Sheepskin Sat Nam, Washing sheepskins--I wash mine in the washer, cold water, woolite or coldwater soap. Guest guest
Hello Gary, Sounds like you will have such nice vibrations from this sheepskin. Glad to help you with this. Sat Nam Zeta
Guest guest
Sat Nam, Using your sheepskin will mat it down and washing it will fluff it up again. If you use it it will get used--the law of cause and effect. But you can keep those happy thoughts going for at least 68 seconds as you totally endulge in the luxury. And you can program your thoughts to make you so prosperous that you can go to New Zealand and get another one when this one wears down. Maybe by then you will be so happy you won't even care. Guest guest
If you sleep or use this sheepskin close to your body/breath be very thoughtfull about dry cleaning -dry cleaning uses VERY carcinogenic fluids and the residual left in the item you don't really want to breath. walk in beauty cris
Guest guest
I have had many sheepskins from a couple of different sources, store bought and my neighbor had sheep in Fairbanks.. No need to think you need to dry clean it. A mild, non detergent soap like Ivory in cool water works fine. I would not put it in the dryer with any heat at all. If your skin has longest hair, you can tumble it on an air setting to give it that "rasta look" and then let it air dry. I never comb my lamb and now prefer shorter hair. Ann, to get sheepskins anywhere near Boston call Arjan Kaur at 508 376-2804. She is the sheepskin lady. Guest guest
If you don't know if your sheep skin can be put in the washing machine you can wash it by hand in the tub and hang to dry then brush. Use cold water and very mild detergent. Just like you would do with a good wool sweater. My beloved husband kindly washed my sheepskin in the washing machine for me and it shrank a little but is still quite usable. I probably should rub some lanolin into the leather backing.
