Guest guest
[Oops..sent this to the other list by mistake] Hello. Sat nam I used to have some terrible insomnia (I was not doing Kundalini Yoga or any meditation). Finally in desparation I asked my md for sleeping pills. He prescribed Ambien. I asked him if that was addictive. His reply; nah, not at all, totally safe. Actually, they are addictive. Also in some cases (me for ex) they have a side effect of mental confusion. Plus there is a rebound effect from sleeping pills- that is if you take them one night to sleep, (and I only took them occasionally), the next night you may have more sleep--difficulty than before you ever took any medication. I never slept better than when I was doing kundalini yoga. Actually, when I was in Houston, I lived in the ashram. My bedroom was right under the guruwara- which is the place where Sikhs pray and chant and where the Sikh Holy Book is kept. Boy did I ever literally sleep like a baby!! Anyway, I threw out my sleeping pills after a particularly horrible experience of combining them with a bronchitis remedy [which my "ex"-doctor did not tell me not to combine] - led to hallucinations, like a bad acid trip laced with speed. Now, sometimes I fall asleep listening to a Yogi chant tape and that seems to work well. If I don't fall asleep as fast as I want to I use some of the herbs mentioned by Anita Sands {skullcap, vervain, hops, valerian}. I use the extract. I just put them in a glass of water and sip. I fall asleep in minutes. BTW- be aware some people have an opposite reaction to Valerian - they become more energetic. Also I'm told too much can cause a trembling effect. I've no doubt that the best sleep remedy is Kun.Yoga, and thank you Gururattan for the one you posted.... Best, Kartar Kaur
