Guest guest
Hi, My name is Janice and I'm from Orlando, Florida. I just started attending yoga classes at a local ashram about one month ago. I go to class about 4 times per week for 1 1/2 hours per class. I just love it, but I really don't understand how it works. Can anyone suggest an easy to understand beginner's book? Thanks! Gururattan has a beginners book that should answer most of your questions. You also have the author available on this list to answer any questions. Your Ashram should also have some books if you ask. Any book that focus's on the teachings of Yogi Bhajan usually has some introduction and are my favorites. Hope you actively use our list as a source of connection. Welcome to the list, and to KY, Richard: You can access KY (Kundalini Yoga) in many ways (Internet, books, videos, etc.), but I highly recommend starting with a teacher. You can find a list of teachers on-line at www.3ho.org (3HO is the primary organization behind KY. Failing to find one, I'd probably recommend that you start with a video or two to get a basic view of the practice. I've heard that Nirvair Singh's videos are good, but as I have been blessed with several good teachers, I haven't actually tried any videos myself. You will then probably want a book (or several). I recommend that my beginning students get a copy of "Kundalini Yoga: the flow of eternal power" by Shakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa. Not only does it have a selection of kriyas and meditations, but also a good overview of Kundalini Yoga. Note that a kriya is a series of asanas (postures) which have a cumulative effect, providing a more powerful benefit than merely doing some random asanas. You might, over time, think about adding a book with a wider selection of kriyas and meditations. I'm very partial to Gururattan Kaur Khalsa's books (especially "Transitions to a Heart-Centered World" and "Sexuality and Spirituality", which have some great kriyas and lots of wonderful meditations). And it is also nice to have some KY music on tape or CD, to listen to and to chant along with. All of these things can be ordered from Ancient Healing Ways at 800-359-2940 or GOlden Temple at 800-829- 3970 - you could call and get a catalog. This should get you started - please check back here if you have more questions. Sat Nam! Sadhant Singh
