Guest guest
As another overweight person I can give you a few suggetions. One, get the tape Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss with Suzanne Deason. This is not a KY tape, rather a loose form of ashtanga. The important part of this tape is that it presents four different women at different levels of fitness doing the same workout, but with various modifications to suit their abilities. I would also suggest that you take up some other form of exercise additionally. I really like walking because it's free, can be done anywhere, and doesn't require any equipment beyond a decent pair of shoes. Start small (a good amount is 30 minutes, but even starting at 10 minutes and working up will produce benefits)and work up a little every week or so. If you feel that you just cannot do both yoga and some other cardio - I would say go with just the yoga for a while. Yoga has so many benefits beyond just being able to lose weight (and you will definetely lose some weight with certain forms of yoga). Yoga will make you more flexible, align your body so that you hurt less, increase your energy, and it will increase your confidence so that you are more likely to make other necessary changes in your life. This is the really big one for overweight people because we get so caught up in thinking that we can't do something or that we shouldn't because we'll look silly. Part of the tenets of yoga is non-violence, and that includes violence to ourselves. Yoga can definetely help concur self esteem issues. Last suggestion, you probably already knew, look at your diet. I'm not one to preach about a perfect diet, but the fact is that it dramatically affects the way we feel. If you're not already, consider a daily multivitamin (unless you've got a really great veg diet). When I make diet changes I like to think of adding good things to my diet rather than eliminating bad things. For example, if you add a few pieces of fruit to your diet per week you will begin to notice that some of the other things that you would have eaten don't seem to be eaten as much or as often. Just concentrate on adding good things. If you do that, the "bad" things will fall away on their own (which is a whole lot easier that trying to kill yourself with willpower). Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, WATER WATER WATER. Good luck! I hope you have a joyful journey to better health. Tammy PS You might also try keeping a journal, at least for a little while, to help you figure out what things might be sapping your energy and what makes you feel good. Guest guest
Kundaliniyoga , "Maggie" <maggie10@m...> wrote: I think Tammie provided a lot of great information in her response - I just wanted to add a couple of things to consider. First is that there is an aspect of Kundalini yoga called BreathWalk (the book by that name came out in June, by Gurucharan and Yogi Bhajan). As the name implies, BreathWalk combines walking with specific breathing patterns and meditational techniques to provide many benefits in addition to the well-known benefits of aerobic exercise. If you are going to walk, this is a great way to get more out of it. Also, about the idea that vitamins are not necessary if the diet is good enough: an excellent diet, vegetarian or not, may provide the minimum RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of some vitamins - but those recommendations are sufficient only to stave off deficiency diseases. These levels fall far short of the optimal intake, and with few exceptions, multi-vitamins only address the idea of attaining the RDA. Additional supplementation, therefore, seems (and careful studies bear this out) especially important for anyone who is altering their diet, undergoing stress, or aging - hey, that's all of us! For additional information on this subject, I recommend Dharma Singh Khalsa's book "Brain Longevity". He is (obviously) an American Sikh, and a medical doctor who uses Kundalini yoga and nutritional approaches to improve health and stave off stress and a variety of age-related physical declines. Guest guest
You're totally welcome. I know how hard it is to make such changes...I'm still in the process. I find that concentrating more on the good things I can do makes the things I can't begin to fall away on their own - without creating all of the negative guilt energy. Remember, do no harm? It really can be a wonderful and joyful journey. You just have to be patient with yourself, gentle with yourself, and willing to forgo the idea of losing weight to embrace the idea of pursuing health (which will then bring about weight loss incidentally). Guest guest
I'm actually taking melatonin, which I think might be helpfull and a product with triptofan(I don't remember the spelling) that helps the release of serotonin. You can get what is called 5-HTP (Hydroxy Tryptophan) from various sources - this amino acid is a digestive precursor of serotonin - that is, your body can convert it to serotonin. 5-HTP is demonstrated to be helpful with hyperalgesia (abnormal sensitivity to pain), migraine, depression and certain factors related to serotonin deficiency (hyperactivity, attention deficit, etc.). Often, feeling tired is symptomatic of low-level depression, and the beneficial effects of Kundalini yoga on this kind of depression - and the causes thereof - cannot be denied, and helping along the process with 5-HTP has worked very well on students of mine and several people I know, FWIW. Studies on melatonin seem pretty ambiguous. It does appear to be helpful for many people to re-adjust the sleep cycle when traveling across time-zones (jet-lag) - but not for everybody, and the reasons for this are not clear. We naturally produce melatonin as part of the sleep cycle, and actual melatonin production deficiency seems very rare - in general, I believe that it is advised that people do not supplement regularly with melatonin unless they have serious sleep disorders (related specifically to melatonin deficiency - IOW, see a doctor on this one). In either case, these products will not help re-balance your metabolism - they merely fill in for what your body won't produce by itself. Kundalini yoga, because of the direct action on the glandular and endocrine systems, will definitely have the effect of helping to balance the metabolism, and things like self-image and diet will all play a role. Simple substances like caffeine and sugar can have a significant (often deleterious) effect on mood and metabolism. Nothing that we've discussed here is a quick fix, of course - that is the realm of pharmaceutical intervention with all the attendant problems. Be patient with yourself and the processes you undertake, and remember that you are loved. Sat Nam! Sadhant Singh

I really like the idea of concentrating on adding good foods to my diet, instead of always worrying about the food that I have to "remove" from my diet. I always get hung up on what I can't have. Guest guest
hi, i have a question if being overweight is caused by not letting go of the past and trying to hard hard to control our external environment is food in general a reflection of these two actions? I ask because my first two years in college i was an anorexic and i always thought it was these actions that led me to develope the disease. I know for sure the control factor played an immense role in it developing. So i guess what i am asking do we, and if we do , how do we use food to control our lives and hide us from ourselves? Guest guest
As a person with a persistent, although minor, weight problem, but more importantly, a HUGE fatigue problem (I have fibromyalgia which is like chronic fatigue syndrome only with pain), I can say that yoga of all kinds is a GREAT way to energize you, as well as balance you. The balancing especially helps with weight. Many yoga postures are also designed to activate certain hormones, including those that regulate metabolism. Also, if there are issues of control at the root of your weight "problem" - an earlier suggestion with which I concur, yoga is so self-empowering that it curbs your inclination to self-destruct in order to exert control. But, if I may give credit to a non-yoga source of energy, I suggest blue-green algae. I used to sleep at least 12 hours a day and still be exhausted all day. About a month ago, I committed to a daily yoga practice and began taking the algae. Although this prevents me from knowing which of these two gets credit for the change, I don't mind because I think they both help. Now, I sleep more like 9 hours a day and feel much more energized. I have come close enough to a daily practice before to know that helps, but to also see that the algae is making a huge difference. I buy it in powder form and add it to a bottle of water, with a splash of juice for some taste (I use unsweetened cranberry, since it too is somewhat detoxing). I swear by the stuff! Good luck. -Susan
Guest guest
Just a personal opinion, as I am not an expert in weight control or addiction, but since you're asking . . . Food is not only an essential tool for life, but an enjoyable one. It is also very personal. Thus, I do think that having something so critical to our very existence being completely within our control makes food a logical medium for people seeking to exert control over their lives. Some people are even taught this. For instance, if you grew up in a house where control was denied you, this may have taken many subtle forms. But, as is often the case with anorexics, or even overweight people, food may have been an issue in your home, where control was absent. Perhaps food was used as a reward or a punishment. Perhaps it was just a way your parent(s) felt they could contol you, making you eat when you weren't hungry, or things you didn't like, or more (or less) than you cared to. This sets up the belief system - and the habit - that food is a means of control. On the other hand, if there were other control issues, like maybe some sort of abuse, food may have been an area devoid of conflict, making it a natural escape to turn to. Because it is a pleasurable experience (not just because its tasty, but because of the chemicals it releases in the body, especially with sweets and carbs), it is a way to comfort yourself when you feel anxious - usually about something else in your life you feel you cannot control. Also, being in control of what goes in your mouth may help you forget the lack of control elsewhere. The problem is, of course, that this becomes addictive and in the end, food becomes yet another thing you cannot control. A good tool for helping to overcome this is to recognize your use of food as an escape. Doing yoga regularly should help you get in touch with your emotions on a deeper level, and also with how your body feels, including your hunger, or lack thereof. So, when you feel like eating something, ask yourself first if you are hungry. (And not just mouth-hungry.) If the answer is no, as it will often be, ask yourself why you want to eat. Yes, mostly it will be out of habit, but what in particular is triggering your desire to escape at that moment. Was something just said that hurt your feelings, but you don't want to feel it, so you turn to food. Or maybe you have a chore to do that is stressing you out, and the anxiety from that can be alleviated with a cookie or two or three. My suggestion is just to ask yourself the questions, not to do anything about it. Use your eating as a tool to self-awareness, tuning inward to see what's going on with you that makes you want to eat when you don't physically need to. Then, if you still want to the cookie, go ahead. Guilt is counter-productive to dieting, as it is one of those emotions from which we seek escape. But learning to understand the mechanism is itself a powerful tool. You see, when you force yourself to look at the feelings you're trying to escape by eating, you are not actually escaping them. Thus, the whole point of the behavior is disempowered. If you have to face why you eat each time, eventually, you will become accustomed to self-reflection in response to your feelings, instead of self-ingestion. I hope this makes sense and is helpful. -Susan
Guest guest
to add on the weight topic. I feel the same thing. I found I eat when I could not control things around me. Since finding that I do that, trying to stop getting mad because I can't control things around me has been interesting. I was doing good for three years and did not gain any more weight, but now to lose it has been a challenge. then this last year so many things have happened I am finding my self trying to control again. with the last year I started school, became divorced, my daughter was adopted to my ex-husband, she moved out and my mom had open heart surgery. just to name a few. so I have found my self asking my higher self for help not to gain any more, and to l et go of all the past. when I sit around and think about doing this I find I come up with all kinds of reasons not to. I know if any one can believe they are strong enough, they can do anything. love Nancy Sat Nam Rikki Schafer wrote: > hi, i have a question if being overweight is caused by not letting go > of the > past and trying to hard hard to control our external environment is > food in > general a reflection of these two actions?
